The Museum of Whales You Will Never See: And Other Excursions to Iceland's Most Unusual Museums
A. Kendra Greene will discuss her book The Museum of Whales You Will Never See: Travels Among the Collectors of Iceland at a live virtual event 7:30 p.m., Tuesday Dec. 1 at www.AllenTV.org Submit questions until 8:30 p.m. that evening through [email protected]
Artist and writer Kendra Greene is a fixture at the Nasher Sculpture Center and Dallas Museum of Art where she often leads artist and writing workshops. Insights garnered from her museum experience enriched her with unique perspectives for delving into the intriguing and quirky landscape of Icelandic Museums. Iceland has a population of 356,000 and has 265 museums – nearly one for every 1,250 residents! Enjoy the journey that combines travel history, the mythic and the eccentric.
When asked what inspired her to pen this book, Kendra declared, “Nowhere in the world have I seen personal collections turn into museums so seamlessly, so frequently, or so brilliantly—and so many of them, so recently!—as on the superlative island of Iceland. And those museums have everything to do not just with how we hold on to some few precious things, but how part of our humanity is that we keep, make, or even invent those things because they keep close to those memories, those stories, we can’t live without.”
Now that so many of the world’s museums confront unprecedented challenges, it behooves us to take this quirky quest without obtaining a passport.
A Kendra Greene also teaches Creative Writing at the University of Texas at Dallas.
