According to developmental psychologist Robyn Fivush, Ph.D., in Psychology Today, research suggests reading fiction can help build empathy, perspective-taking and prosocial skills by immersing readers in lives and experiences different from their own. Fiction may also help reduce feelings of loneliness and strengthen skills that support real-world social connection, while reading more broadly is associated with cognitive and well-being benefits.

For libraries, it's another reminder that encouraging people to read for pleasure isn't just about books—stories can help people understand one another, connect and feel part of a shared human experience.

For anyone wondering whether libraries are still relevant, this research offers another reminder: access to stories can help people build empathy, understand perspectives beyond their own, and feel more connected to others. By making those stories freely available to everyone, libraries support something communities need as much as ever—opportunities to understand one another and connect through our shared human experience.

Happy Fiber Finish Friday!

The ladies in our Needles, Hooks, & Books group finished three projects this week.

Ashley finished the delightfully colored blanket that will go to a lucky recipient next week.

Michelle crocheted the lovely blue and white baby blanket that will also be gifted soon.

And Pat finished knitting a sock that will keep at least one of her feet warm this winter. 🥳

Needles, Hooks, & Books is a fiber crafting group for adults ages 18+ that meets every Thursday evening from 6-7:30 pm in the Library Meeting Room.

The group is very casual and drop-ins are always welcome. If you have a portable fiber project and want to chat with fellow crafters, this group is for you.

All experience levels are welcome. This is not a teaching group, but the ladies are always willing to offer support.

There is no registration or residency requirements for this program and as always, everything is 100% FREE.

For questions, please call the Library at 313-381-2425.
