Welcome back to the school year! We hope everyone has had a wonderful summer and is ready to start the new school year with hard work, good study habits and a positive attitude. I myself have spent the last few days hearing all about the amazing teachers and staff who are welcoming our students (my kids included) into their schools and classrooms. What a blessing it is to be able to hear the joy our students have after the first few days. New friendships, new opportunities and new stories.

Reading one of the short stories in the anthology Masquerade, Jamie Kamlet’s tale “You Are Who You Pretend To Be” prompted a visit to the Pirate Caves of the story. The caves—a secret spot on the shoreline in Dana Point—are not easily accessible from the Harbor let alone from Strands beach where we started our adventure! Needless to say the search is not for the feint-hearted. However, the group had an amazing guide (James Kamlet, a former 4th grade teacher) to the caves and back again, watching for pirates all the way.
Masquerade: California Writers Circle is a collection of 26 original stories from local authors, it offers surprising peeks beyond everyday first impressions. It is available on Amazon at Masquerade. Get your FREE digital copy January 15 and 16.

Dear family and friends,
I wanted to share some exciting news. This summer I worked on writing a short story called “Homestretch.” This story is currently on sale as part of an anthology called “Masquerade” on Amazon.
The best part about this anthology is that there is something for everyone. Choose from a range of genres including mystery, adventure, romance, history, horror, fantasy, sci-fi, social commentary, and satire. I hope you check it out. (Search Masquerade and Kiana Berkman or follow this link.)
If you do read this story on Kindle unlimited or purchase this book, please consider writing a short review of your experience. Thank you and Happy Reading! ~Kiana
Here is the introduction from “Homestretch”
Nargess defied convention. She was going to walk through hell—if that’s what it took—to find her freedom after twelve years of oppression. She tiptoed around the rules, broke some, and protested others in her own way. This time she had crossed a dangerous line that put her family in danger. The Ministry of Cultural and Islamic Guidance were coming for her children and the only thing she could do was grab them and run.
“Homestretch” is a first-hand account of the harrowing adventures of an immigrant family in search of freedom from tyranny and religious persecution. Their story is a vivid reminder of the promise America holds for those arriving on its shores: freedom, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Many schools are continuing education through distance learning, providing instructional activity designed to continue progress at home. Other schools are simply taking extended breaks, and intend to continue through the summer months.
Berktree Learning Can Help!
We provide in-home and web-based tutoring. Our goal is to help continue the tutoring process with students who want to advance or need educational assistance in the absence of a classroom. Continuing academic progress does not fall solely on students and parents. Berktree Learning can help!
Students can use this time to get ahead and hone their skills. They can progress through assigned material or strengthen their conceptual understanding of past content. Students can work on study habits and testing skills that can empower them through the rest of the school year.
