🚨 YOU FOUGHT TO GET YOUR CONTRACTOR LICENSE. WHY OPERATE LIKE YOU NEVER GOT IT?

You passed the exams. Put in the time. Invested in your future.

Then you start a project without the right construction contract—or skip the required building permit—and expect your license to protect everything.

That license is not a free pass to skip the fundamentals.

LICENSE. CONTRACT. PERMIT. 🔑📝🏗️

✅ Hold the proper contractor license for the work.
✅ Use the RIGHT contract for the project—not just a generic form with a signature.
✅ Pull required permits and follow through on inspections.

Your scope of work, payment terms, responsibilities, and change orders need to be clear and documented. A handshake doesn’t replace a proper agreement.

You can be licensed and STILL leave your business exposed.

🚧 GENERAL A AND GENERAL B ARE NOT THE SAME LICENSE.

Both say “general,” but they cover different types of work in California.

🛣️ Class A — General Engineering
Think infrastructure: highways, bridges, dams, sewer systems, pipelines, and related grading and earthwork. These projects require specialized engineering knowledge and skill.

🏠 Class B — General Building
Think homes, ADUs, additions, commercial buildings, and kitchen or bathroom remodels involving multiple trades.

For example:
✅ Building a bridge → Class A work.
✅ Building a home → Class B work.
✅ Remodeling a kitchen with plumbing and electrical → A Class B project.

And remember: a B license doesn’t automatically authorize every individual trade. Generally, projects involving trades beyond framing or carpentry need at least TWO unrelated trades other than framing or carpentry, with specific specialty-license and subcontracting exceptions.

Choose the classification that matches your experience and the work you want to build your business around.
