ALGONA — One morning, Jennifer Christensen sat around the carpet in her third-grade classroom with her students. During these morning sessions, they would talk about the upcoming days scheduled, share, ask questions, work on social-emotional skills and sometimes discuss topics the students had concerns about.

“Make the world a better place is the class motto,” Christensen said.

It was on that carpet that her students’ decided they would like to do something to help the animals in Australia who suffered because of the fire. Last week, four students delivered $638.24 in coins that they had gathered from other students, teachers and adults.

“The theme is 'We may be small, but we are mighty' by just knowing they can make a difference by doing small acts of kindness and how it can grow and become a bigger thing through a chain reaction,” Christensen said. “The students were the ones who said we need to contact the newspaper. That was their idea. They’re trying to find ways to make the world a better place.”

Christensen’s third-grade class works closely with North Iowa Lumber. Every month the students do a service project. “It may be as simple as holding doors open and saying hello with a smile or bring cards to other people or go to the nursing home to sing and read to the residents.

One of the reasons Jayson Ruehle, 9, thought it would be nice to help the koala bears was because he likes animals. “Australia is an island. The animals don’t have anywhere to go,” he said. “The animals and their habitats are threatened. They don’t have any food. That is why we wanted to help.”
Nine-year-old Grethel Torres said, “People are dying. The animals are dying. There are less animals. If they don’t have anything to eat, they will die and there won’t be anymore animals of those types.”

Torres said they have raised money to help. “Some of our class members presented to other classes,” she said. “We did a class presentation and talked about what is going on. We persuaded them to donate money.”

Grayson Terwilliger, 9, said it felt good to give the presentation. “I think everybody felt it was a good idea. A lot of students wanted to do it,” he said. “We learned they are concerned about the fire and all the animals that died or were injured in the fire.”

Kate Limbaugh, also 9, said “We’re doing a chain reaction from one class to multiple school buildings and North Iowa Lumber. It is fun to share what we have learned.”

The students learned about public speaking, persuasive writing to convince others to help, and teamwork. “Instead of sitting back and having empathy, how can students move that to compassion?” Christensen asked. “How can we do something about what is going on? How can they be successful contributors and citizens?”

Ruehle said the hardest part was standing in front of classmates. “I was scared. I didn’t feel comfortable,” he said. “I did feel better after I did it.”

The students also did research on Australia, koala bears and other animals, and the fire before their presentations. Classroom subjects covered by the project were science, social studies, reading and writing.

“It was a good project for the kids because it was driven by the kids. They brought it up,” Christensen said. “It was something they were concerned about. They cared enough to want to do something. They put it into action. I just facilitated."
