At Mousam River STEM Academy, our preschool and elementary students do not use tablets, laptops, or computer-based programs to learn math.
Our school was founded by engineers—and engineers need a rock-solid understanding of math to design, build, innovate, and solve problems that don't already have answers.
We believe children deserve that same strong foundation.
Our math instruction is teacher-led, purposeful, and hands-on. Every lesson has specific learning goals. We teach those concepts with real materials, manipulatives, tools, and meaningful problems instead of putting children in front of a screen.
So what does math look like here?
📏🥣 We teach fractions by putting them directly into students' hands. Students use rulers and tape measures to locate and compare halves, quarters, eighths, and sixteenths while measuring and building. They also learn to cook healthy recipes, using measuring cups and spoons to experience those same fractional relationships in a different way—combining, doubling, and halving quantities as they go.
📐 We teach geometry through designing and building. Students measure angles and dimensions, create drawings, calculate measurements, and apply what they've learned to real projects.
🧩 We build number sense with physical manipulatives. Students move quantities, compose and decompose numbers, regroup, compare values, and physically see the mathematical relationships they're learning.
Our students aren't clicking through online math exercises or waiting for a computer to tell them whether an answer is correct.
They are measuring- building- calculating- comparing- problem-solving, and explaining their thinking—with a teacher guiding the learning every step of the way.
