Mousam River STEM Academy will be at Kennebunk HarvestFest TOMORROW, Saturday, October 17! 🍁

☀️🚗 Sunshine, Circuits & Solar-Powered Speed! ⚡

Today, our upper elementary students put their engineering skills to work building solar-powered cars while exploring the science of photovoltaics—how sunlight can be converted into electricity!

Before getting to work on their cars, students learned about series and parallel circuits, practiced drawing electrical diagrams, and explored how electricity flows through a circuit.

Then it was time to put their knowledge into action! Using solar panels, motors, and determination, students worked to bring their cars to life! 🚗☀️

🏡🔨 From Blueprints to Buildings: STEM in Action!

Our K–6 students had an incredible opportunity to explore architecture, engineering, and construction during a field trip to Prospect Reserve at Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport!

We started with a special presentation at school, where students examined real site plans and architectural floor plans while learning how different professionals work together to bring an entire neighborhood to life.

Then, we headed to the construction site! 🏗️ Students explored five stages of residential development, from untouched land and homesites being prepared for construction to foundations, framing, and electrical and mechanical installations. They also discovered the underground infrastructure that makes a neighborhood function!

🌲 One especially interesting lesson was how thoughtful planning can preserve natural beauty by maintaining open spaces and trees surrounding the homes. Students learned that development isn't just about what you build, but also what you choose to leave untouched!

🍎 Peel, Chop, Cook… Applesauce! 🍎

Today our students turned a whole lot of fresh apples into homemade applesauce from scratch!

A huge thank you to all of our families who sent in apples, peelers, rotary apple peelers, spiralizers, and other supplies to help make today possible! ❤️

The kids got right to work learning how to peel, core, slice, and chop their apples. Along the way, they explored what apples look like inside, discovered the beautiful star made by the seeds, and practiced lots of hands-on kitchen skills!

Now our apples are slowly cooking away with apple c***r and cinnamon, and the smell of fall has filled the entire building! 🍂

We can’t wait to dig into our delicious homemade applesauce this afternoon! 🍎❤️

🍎🍂 Fall Science & Art in Preschool! 🍂🍎

Our preschoolers have been busy exploring fall through hands-on science and art projects!

They created colorful shaving cream apple art, experimenting with swirling and mixing colors to make every apple completely unique. 🎨🍎 They also celebrated the changing season with adorable fall leaf hedgehogs, using colorful autumn leaves to bring their creations to life! 🍁🦔

These hands-on projects give our youngest learners opportunities to experiment, create, observe, and explore—all while having lots of fun along the way!

🚢 Exploring Bath Iron Works & the Maine Maritime Museum! ⚓

Yesterday, our students headed to Bath, Maine, for a day of exploring our state’s incredible maritime history and industry!

We started with a stop downriver from Bath Iron Works, where students got to see the massive ships being built along the Kennebec River. They spotted the enormous dry docks and towering cranes and got a firsthand look at just how BIG engineering can be!

From there, we headed to the Maine Maritime Museum, where students explored exhibits, learned about Maine’s long history of shipbuilding, and discovered how boats and ships have shaped our state for generations.

This was a truly special opportunity: our students weren’t just learning about engineering and Maine history—they were seeing both come to life right in front of them. Experiences like this make learning unforgettable and show students the real-world possibilities of what they’re studying. ❤️⚓🚢

🎃 Pumpkins, Gourds & Watercolors! 🎨

Today our students used real pumpkins and gourds as their subjects for a fall-inspired watercolor project! 🍂 Students carefully observed the different shapes, colors, textures, and details before bringing what they saw to life on paper.

They practiced color, value, layering, and watercolor techniques, while still having plenty of room to add their own creativity and personality. We love how each painting turned out completely unique! 🎃🖌️🍁

🚋 Our First Field Trip of the Year!

Our K–6 students kicked off the school year with their first field trip to the Seashore Trolley Museum!

The kids had so much fun stepping back in time and exploring the museum’s incredible collection of historic trolleys. They were able to climb aboard several different trolley cars—including a double-decker trolley—and take a real trolley ride along the museum’s railway! 🚋

We also got a behind-the-scenes look at the restoration of Narcissus, a 1912 luxury electric interurban car that once traveled between Portland and Lewiston. Students saw the trolley in the middle of the restoration process and learned about the work that goes into preserving these incredible pieces of Maine’s transportation history.

Another favorite stop was the Maine Central Model Railroad, where there was so much to discover in the detailed miniature towns, landscapes, buildings, and railways. 🚂

It was two fantastic days filled with history, engineering, transportation, and hands-on learning—and a pretty great way to start our field trips for the year! ❤️

🌿 Growing Leaders, Building Community! 🌿

Yesterday, our entire school—from our littlest preschoolers all the way through 6th grade—headed out together for a beautiful nature hike! ☀️🌲

One of the things that makes Mousam River STEM Academy so special is the opportunity for our students to learn, explore, and grow together across all ages. Our students practiced working together, helping one another, exploring the natural world, and building confidence outdoors—all while strengthening friendships and connections throughout our school community.

We intentionally teach our older students how to be leaders, giving them opportunities to guide, encourage, and support our younger students. At the same time, our younger students get to learn alongside and look up to their older peers. 💚

Time spent together outdoors also supports curiosity, independence, social-emotional growth, and a strong sense of belonging.

Learning from nature, building community, developing leaders, and growing together—that’s what makes our school so special! 🌿🥾☀️

🍎🌋 Apple Volcanoes! 🌋🍎

Our Little Einsteins Preschool students turned apples into VOLCANOES! 🤩

With a little hands-on science (and a whole lot of fizz!), our preschoolers explored what happens when ingredients react together. They made predictions, watched closely, and were VERY excited when their apples started bubbling and overflowing! 🫧🍎

Science is always more fun when it erupts! 🌋✨
