The Division of Performing Arts at Alfred University offers a wide variety of educational and creative opportunities, teaching and nurturing passionate individuals in their development as critical thinkers and performing artists in an ever-changing world. We offer a major in Theatre and minors in Theatre, Dance, Music and Performance Design and Technology. Participation in productions and performance groups is open to all students, regardless of academic major. The Miller Performing Arts Center provides a home for the Alfred University Division of Performing Arts, as well as serving as a cultural focal point for the region. Smith III Theatre, an extremely versatile intimate, experimental theatre and the Miller Theater, which opened in the Fall of 2010. The Miller Theater seats approximately 450 and affords all who attend an excellent performance experience, be it theatre, dance or music. The Center features outstanding rehearsal spaces, individual practice rooms, studios, and areas for study and collaboration, as well as spectacular views and spaciousness for students and faculty alike.

What can you do with sound? A lot more than you might think. 🎧

Alfred University’s Dr. Matias Homar is part of Sound of Sanctuary, a collaborative project using music, storytelling, history, and culture to explore migration, community, and belonging.

Matias created “Pora Pora,” inspired by Argentine folk music and the ways cultures mix and influence one another across the Americas.

This is Sound Studies at Alfred: creating music, recording and producing, experimenting with technology, telling stories, and exploring how sound connects to culture and the world around us.

From exploring ROBE lighting technology and color, to costume making based on Tarot designs, stage crew practices, technical theatre, and mentor Q/A session. Our students had the opportunity to learn from industry professionals and connect with others in the field.

What a special weekend on campus with Monica Bill Barnes & Company. 💫

So much creativity, connection, learning, sharing, and community—all in one weekend. It was incredibly meaningful to see so many students, faculty, and community members gathered together—sharing in the joy, curiosity, and inspiration of this performance.

A huge thank you to NYS DanceForce and the incredible faculty of Alfred University’s Performing Arts Division for creating experiences that bring our community together. The performing arts have a unique way of connecting us—across generations, backgrounds, and experiences—and this weekend was a beautiful reminder of that.

What does studying sound at Alfred look like? Sometimes, it looks like this. 🌲🎧🛶

Students in Alfred University’s Sound Gathering course, taught by Dr. Matias Homar, took their classroom to Foster Lake, exploring the environment through sound — recording underwater, inside and around trees, clams, and the surrounding landscape. It’s part listening, part experimenting, part technology, and part discovery.

At Alfred, studying sound isn’t limited to a studio or classroom. You get to go places, try things, make things, and discover new ways of hearing the world around you.
