Leadership Development Studies | Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society 09/05/2023

Dear Tau Nu Members, Alumni & Friends:

Please see below for a summary of a PTK year/scholarship info with links.
The time has come for a new group of students to take over this page which the next officer can do by contacting the current admin. In this post, we'd like to invite all members and alumni to reflect on the 4 Hallmarks of PTK: Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Fellowship, all of which have played a part for Tau Nu's members since it's founding in 1969 at NOVA.

The PTK year begins in the fall with an invitation to membership, induction, and then meetings which foster Fellowship and Service, two of PTK's hallmarks. Depending on the members, the chapter can work on becoming a Star chapter and earning Hallmark awards for chapter programs. Throughout the year, PTK members can attend transfer fairs and PTK Edge: free professional development courses which include employment, transfer, healthcare jobs, research skills and career planning. https://www.ptk.org/benefits/professional-development-courses/

The spring semester brings another round of inductions and tying up the end of the program year for Hallmarks awards or Honors in Action projects. It is also conference time with the Virginia/West Virginia regional conference in March & PTK Catalyst in April. PTKers are entitled to wear a special stole, honors cords and medallion for graduation which you can get from the shop.

One of the great benefits of being a PTK member (no, it's not just the GEICO insurance discount!) is scholarships. The PTK Fall Scholarship applications close December 1st and the All-Virginia and All-American honorees are selected from these fall applications. The PTK Spring Scholarships close on May 15th. All PTKers can apply for these awards. https://www.ptk.org/scholarships/

Additional scholarships can be found by applying to
the NOVA Foundation: https://giving.nvcc.edu/making-impact/who-we-support/scholarships
the Herb Block Foundation: https://www.herbblockfoundation.org/
and the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation: https://www.jkcf.org/
In fact, a number of Tau Nu members have been semi-finalists or winners of the prestigious JKC scholarships. Also, thousands of 4 year colleges around the country offer scholarships to PTK members. Be sure to ask the financial aid offices at the respective institutions - sometimes the award is not done automatically.

PTK also has a leadership skills course open to all members and in fact, all PTK courses are also open to alumni. Certainly, we need good leaders in all fields: https://www.ptk.org/benefits/leadership-development-studies/

Since this page will be dormant in the weeks ahead, please feel free to follow Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society & the regional chapter's page Virginia/West Virginia Region of Phi Theta Kappa Alumni may want to consider joining the regional chapter which offers an annual baccalaureate completion scholarship with applications open in February and awards made at the March Virginia/West Virginia conference. https://vawv-region.ptk.org/default.aspx

In closing, we wish you (Tau) TEMA (Nu) NIKE which means to "Honor Success" in yourself and others!

Wishing all a Happy 4th! For many years, the PTK Tau Nu Chapter had a Keep America Beautiful project to clean up a strip of roadside near the campus in Alexandria twice a year - for MLK day and in August, but turnover interrupted it. About 2 years ago, chapter members were interested in reviving the project, but were not able to get permission from the college. Hopefully, this can be revisited in the future since it was a great way to involve the entire campus.

Happy , America! Please remember that fireworks 🎇 are not recyclable and need to be disposed of properly.

The 4 Hallmarks of PTK are Service, Leadership, Scholarship and Fellowship. This page has already connected you to leadership and service opportunities this year. Scholarship is usually expressed through a chapter taking up the Honors Research Topic which for the 2022-23 term is "The Art of Play". Playing and making space for the creativity that play encourages cannot be underestimated. Sharing a post from Raritan Valley CC to help you think about the role of play in your own life, in school and in our community.

Announcements: Tau Nu has a new chapter advisor. Welcome to Ms. Coreda Clark who was assistant chapter advisor last year! Many thanks to Dr. Emblom-Callahan for her support as previous advisor! If you are applying for the fall PTK scholarships, you will need an endorsement from Ms. Clark. The deadline is December 1, 2022.

Tau Nu did not have a spring induction and so, far there has been no news about a fall induction. Hopefully, the new chapter leadership will have one soon. PTK scholarships are available at many transfer institutions. If you think you may qualify to be invited to become a member of PTK (3.5 GPA or better), please contact Ms. Clark and indicate your interest in joining so that you may receive an invitation. Her email is in the comments below.

Finally, the chapter has been told that any social media or posts by any NOVA affiliated organizations are subject to approval by the NVCC Marketing Department. The current Admins have already or are coming to the end of their NOVA tenure, so it is time to turn the page over to a new set of Admins who can work with the Marketing Department in implementing this new policy. Before the semester ends, we'll post a few scholarship, meeting and alumni reminders and clean up page info. Thanks to all who have followed here and as ever: Tema (Tau) Nike (Nu)!
