The Lord provided the most GORGEOUS day for us today at the Monday Connection and we made the best of it with pretty much *all* outdoor labs today.

Our middle schoolers studied burned documents in Forensics, and in STEM they made s'mores in the solar ovens they made out of pizza boxes and participated in an egg drop.

It was Arson Investigation day for our High School Forensics students. Students built their own structures that they brought to class, along with a scenario of how the fire started and whether it was arson or an accident. Chief Partridge came out and instructed students on fire behavior and patterns and what arson investigators are looking for in a structure fire to help them determine whether it was intentionally or accidentally set on fire.

Students then burned their homes and we "investigated" the damage the fire left behind. Something really neat that we got to see this year was the FLIR gun firefighters use that shows where the hottest part of the house is before ever entering or beginning to fight the fire.

It was a great day filled with LOTS of learning and fun!

Here’s your friendly reminder that grade levels are an artificial construct. They didn’t exist until 100 years ago. They were designed specifically for mass education in public schools.

It doesn’t matter what grade level of math or grammar or science your kid is in. What matters is that they are always progressing. Checking off boxes like grade levels is a trap full of stress and guilt, yet for some reason, homeschoolers insist on copying the very system they claim to disdain.

When people ask me “what do you recommend for 3rd grade grammar” or “6th grade science” I don’t give them the answer they’re looking for. I don’t know what 3rd grade grammar even is. I just know that my kids start with phonics, then reading, and then learning to spell based on phonics rules, then move on to copy work, and by about middle school they take their first Easy Grammar course. It’s the same with all subjects.

Progression is the goal. Being well-educated is the goal. Not checking off a list. So if my kids take pre-Algebra at age 10 or age 16, it’s not a big deal. What’s important is they they grasp the content and are able to move on to the next level.

It’s like video games. Just keep going until you level up, and if the kids aren’t getting it, stay in that world a little longer. If they are, advance to the next level. 🌟

Have confidence in your ability to make decisions for your kids! A curriculum is only a tool; YOU are the one in charge of construction.

So awesome to see homeschool grads representing on the world stage at the recent Winter Games 🙌

🥇 Chloe Kim — homeschooled while training at an elite level — continues to dominate in snowboard halfpipe.

🥇 Alysa Liu — homeschooled & competing at the highest level in figure skating.

🥇 Jordan Stolz — homeschooled to allow for intense speed skating training and travel — now a breakout Olympic star.

And let’s not forget past homeschool Olympians like Simone Biles and Shaun White who paved the way.

This isn’t about “homeschool makes Olympians.” It’s about flexibility. It’s about giving kids space to pursue big dreams.

Whether that dream is athletics, business, missions, music, or something completely different — there isn’t only ONE path to excellence.

Homeschoolers are showing up. 👏

This past Monday we wrapped up our fall semester by ushering in the holidays with a time of fellowship, fun, and celebration! We enjoyed Christmas music, The 2025 MonCon Christmas Olympics, a Dirty Santa Ornament Exchange, a Gingerbread House Decorating competition, and a meal together. And we're looking forward to seeing one another again in the New Year!

Today's labs for our high schoolers were all about reading blood spatter patterns and determining blood typing. Students worked their way through 5 lab stations, developing suspects, determining possible motives, recreating the crime scene, reading the blood spatter patterns to piece together what happened at a crime scene, and testing all the blood samples found at the scene to rule out suspects.

At the end of the lab, students were invited to create various types of spatter patterns to examine first hand how blood spatter droplets follow the rules of physics every time.

Our middle schoolers created hearts out of tubing and syringes to show the blood flow of the circulatory system through the heart. (Last image).

Today was Eye Dissection Day for the High School Group. But it turned out that since we had so many missing from classes this week, we were able to invite the middle schoolers to join in the eye dissection activity. The most precious part - it was the request of the high schoolers to invite the middle schoolers to join! (We have some pretty stinkin' awesome (pre)teens at the Monday Connection!)
