⚖️ TODAY IN LEGAL HISTORY | SEPTEMBER 4, 1787
How Should America Choose a President?

On September 4, 1787, delegates to the Constitutional Convention confronted a question that would shape American elections for generations: How should the President of the United States be chosen?

The framers had debated multiple possibilities, including election by Congress and a national popular vote. Each raised difficult questions about representation, separation of powers and the independence of the presidency.

Then, on September 4, the Convention's Committee of Eleven presented another solution: a system of electors chosen by the states.

The delegates spent much of the day debating the proposal that would become the foundation of the Electoral College.

⚖️ WHY IT MATTERS
The Electoral College established in the Constitution wasn't simply someone's first idea—it emerged from extensive debate and compromise over how a new nation should choose its executive.

The original system would eventually change, including through the 12th Amendment, but the Electoral College remains part of presidential elections today.

🗳️ And while 2026 isn't a presidential election year, Americans are once again participating in the democratic process as congressional elections take center stage.

For aspiring lawyers, elections are also a reminder of how many legal careers intersect with our system of government—from constitutional and election law to legislative advocacy, public policy and government service.

🎓 Interested in exploring where a legal career could take you?

CLEO helps aspiring law students learn about the profession and prepare for the road ahead through programs including Road to Law School (RTLS) and Jumpstart the LSAT (JLSAT).

Happy Love Litigating Lawyers Day!

Lawyers have certainly endured their share of jokes and stereotypes over the years. But behind the courtroom dramas and legal TV shows are real professionals advocating for clients, resolving disputes, interpreting complex laws and helping people navigate some of the most challenging moments of their lives.

⚖️ SO, WHAT DOES A LITIGATOR ACTUALLY DO?

Litigation attorneys represent clients in legal disputes—and there's a lot more to the job than dramatically shouting "OBJECTION!" in a courtroom. 😉

They research the law, investigate facts, prepare legal arguments, negotiate settlements, take depositions, draft motions and, when necessary, advocate for their clients at trial.

And litigators work in MANY areas of law—from civil rights and employment law to business disputes, personal injury, intellectual property, environmental law and more.

🎓 COULD LITIGATION BE IN YOUR FUTURE?

One of the best parts of exploring a legal career is discovering just how many different paths a law degree can open.

That's exactly what CLEO Scholars programs help aspiring law students begin to explore.

⚖️ TODAY IN LEGAL HISTORY | AUGUST 28, 1963
When 250,000 Voices Helped Move a Nation Forward

On August 28, 1963, more than 250,000 people gathered in Washington, D.C. for the historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom—one of the largest demonstrations for human rights in U.S. history.

Civil rights, religious and labor leaders joined Americans from across the country at the Lincoln Memorial to call for racial equality, economic opportunity, voting rights and meaningful civil rights legislation.

It was there that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his historic "I Have a Dream" speech, while leaders including A. Philip Randolph, John Lewis, Roy Wilkins and Whitney M. Young Jr. also addressed the crowd.

⚖️ WHY IT MATTERS

The March became a defining moment in the Civil Rights Movement, helping build national momentum for change and the landmark legislation that followed—including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965.
It is also a powerful reminder that the law doesn't exist in isolation. People can shape public policy, challenge injustice and help move the law forward.

🎓 And history is still being made in Washington, D.C.

For aspiring law students in the D.C. area, CLEO Connection (CNX) offers an opportunity to learn about the law and the journey to law school through monthly in-person seminars.

⚖️ TODAY IN LEGAL HISTORY | AUGUST 21, 1878

75 Lawyers. 20 States. One Organization That Would Help Shape the American Legal Profession.

On August 21, 1878, 75 lawyers from 20 states and the District of Columbia gathered in Saratoga Springs, New York, to establish the American Bar Association (ABA).

Their goal was ambitious: to advance jurisprudence, promote the administration of justice, encourage uniformity in legislation, and elevate standards of integrity and professional conduct within the legal profession.

What began with that relatively small gathering would grow into an organization deeply connected to the development of the American legal profession.

⚖️ WHY IT MATTERS

The practice of law has changed dramatically since 1878—and so has the path to becoming a lawyer.

Over the decades, the ABA has played an important role in professional ethics, continuing legal education, and standards for law schools and legal education.

And the profession continues to evolve. Today's lawyers pursue careers in civil rights, criminal justice, business, technology, healthcare, entertainment, environmental law, government, public interest and countless other fields.

🎓 Could YOU be part of the legal profession's next generation?

For nearly six decades, CLEO has helped talented students explore legal careers, prepare for law school and succeed in legal education.
