Congressional Debate is a nationally recognized debate form that simulates the United States legislative process. Students are placed in chambers and debate the pros and cons of bills/resolutions, emulating a U.S. The Thomas Jefferson High School team has had incredible success since being founded in 2014. Our largest successes include a 4th place finish in the Tournament of Champions, a 3rd place

In light of recent events we, the captains, decided it's best if we make a statement.

Mental health is an issue we the officers of the TJ Congressional Debate team take very seriously. There are many different sources of mental distress, sometimes due to work, sometimes at home, sometimes due to matters out of our control.

We want to share a couple of things.

First and foremost, Bharath, John, and Nishad are always open if you need someone to talk to. Taking on a mental burden alone is never a good idea. Your friends will help you through any tough times, and all three of our texts are always open. It doesn't matter how well we know you, if you're on this team or not. You matter, and you will always matter, and we are happy to help you if you ask.

Second, we completely understand how stressful TJ is, so while we expect a commitment to the team we totally understand you all have other things going on in your lives. You should never prioritize this activity, or any activity, over your own mental health and sanity. If you need help, reach out.

Third, if you don't feel comfortable reaching out to us, or if it's difficult for you to communicate your stress, please reach out to the su***de prevention hotline. It's completely anonymous and the people who you talk to are trained to make sure you get the help you need, as small or as large as you need it.

National Su***de Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK or 1-800-SUICIDE

CrisisLink Regional Hotline: 703-527-4077

CrisisText: Text NEEDHELP to 85511

Mobile Crisis Unit: 1-844-627-4747

To anyone who is reading this, always make sure you are mentally healthy.

One tragedy is a tragedy too many.

Signed,

Bharath Dileep Kumar, John Lee and Nishad Manohar
