The Mission of The Basilica School of Saint Mary is to nurture Saints, Stewards, and Scholars.

We are a Catholic school in Alexandria, VA serving the needs of over 700 students in grades Prek - 8th grade. We are committed to working hard to educate our students and help them become self-confident, compassionate, and committed citizens who will reach their full potential. As a parish school with over 150 years of history in Alexandria, we are proud of our Catholic traditions and practices.

Today, Friday, September 11, our 7th and 8th grade students participated in a 9/11 Remembrance Service led by Fr. Jason Burchell.

Students from every grade level wrote cards expressing their gratitude to our Alexandria firefighters and police officers for their service. Additional cards were written for military personnel at the Pentagon as an act of appreciation.

Through song and prayer, we remembered and honored those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

Students also listened to the personal account of BSSM parent, Mr. John Lytle, who was present at the Pentagon following the attack.

May we always remember, honor, and pray for all those affected by 9/11, and for those who continue to serve and protect our communities and our nation. 🇺🇲

Today, we joyfully celebrate the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary! 🌹💙

Our Saints gathered together for Mass with Fr. Hathaway to honor Mary and celebrate the beautiful gift of her life. Afterward, students enjoyed a sweet treat—cupcakes to help make this special feast day even sweeter! 🧁✨

May Mary’s example of faith, humility, and loving obedience inspire us to draw ever closer to her Son, Jesus.

Today, our 8th grade students received their Class of 2027 pins—a lasting reminder of all they have learned and the community they have helped build here at The Basilica School of Saint Mary.

As they begin their final year, they now carry the responsibility to care for one another and encourage their classmates, our school community, and all those they meet to live as true saints, stewards, and scholars.

We are so proud of the young men and women they have become and look forward to seeing them lead by example throughout their final year at BSSM. 💙

This afternoon, our halls were filled with excitement, smiles, and so many familiar faces as students and families joined us for our annual Sneak-a-Peek! 🎒✨

From meeting new teachers and exploring homerooms to reconnecting with friends, it was wonderful to welcome our school community back together and celebrate the start of a new school year. And what better way to kick things off than some ice cream as well? 🍦🎉

We’re so grateful for the joy, energy, and enthusiasm our students and families brought with them. We can’t wait to see our halls filled with our saints, stewards, and scholars all year long! 💙📚

Last week, we welcomed our returning and new faculty and staff members as we kicked off the 2026–2027 academic year! 🎉
