In our History with Wissal series, we revisit the figures who carried knowledge across civilizations and shaped generations of seekers.
Gerard of Cremona was a European scholar who traveled to Toledo to access scientific works preserved in Arabic.
He translated dozens of Arabic texts into Latin, including works on astronomy, medicine, and philosophy.
Many of these texts were originally Greek works that survived only through their Arabic translations.
Through this chain of translation, knowledge passed from Greek to Arabic and then into Europe.
Gerard’s work highlights how Arabic translation became a vital bridge in the global history of learning.

في سلسلة تاريخ الوصال، نعود إلى الشخصيات التي حملت المعرفة بين الحضارات وأسهمت في تشكيل أجيال من طالبي العلم.
كان جيراردو الكريموني عالماً أوروبياً رحل إلى طليطلة بحثاً عن المؤلفات العلمية المحفوظة باللغة العربية.
قام بترجمة عشرات الكتب العربية إلى اللاتينية في مجالات الفلك والطب والفلسفة.
وكان العديد من هذه المؤلفات في الأصل نصوصاً يونانية لم تُحفظ إلا من خلال ترجماتها العربية.
ومن خلال هذه السلسلة من الترجمات، انتقلت المعرفة من اليونانية إلى العربية ثم إلى أوروبا.
وتبرز أعمال جيراردو الكريموني الدور المحوري للترجمة العربية كجسر أساسي في تاريخ المعرفة الإنسانية.

Al-Hajjāj ibn Yusuf ibn Matar was among the earliest translators to bring Greek scientific works into Arabic during the Abbasid era.
He translated Euclid’s Elements and Ptolemy’s Almagest, making advanced mathematics and astronomy accessible to Arabic-speaking scholars.
His work laid the foundations for centuries of research in geometry, astronomy, and mathematical reasoning.
These Arabic translations later moved into Latin, shaping European science well into the Renaissance.
Al-Hajjāj’s work stands as a powerful example of how translation can launch entire scientific traditions.
