Giving the Gift of Literacy Wright to Read recruits, trains, and supports volunteer tutors and mentors who work with elementary school students on reading.

Volunteer tutors are matched with Alexandria City Public School students who are identified by their teachers as needing help with reading. Our Tutor/Mentor volunteers work with students in the public libraries, primarily. We also have after school reading programs. In these programs, a group of volunteers tutor at the same time in a specified location.

Mentor of The Month in Alexandria After moving to Alexandria, I knew I wanted to get more involved in the community. I had previously tutored adults in reading and thought it would be fun and a challenge to tutor a child.

As many of you might have seen in our email there is very big news regarding the Wright to Read Program.

"Dear Friend of Wright to Read,

It is with great pleasure I write on behalf of Wright to Read’s Board of Directors to inform you that effective September 1, the Wright to Read program will return to The Campagna Center. Because you are a vital Wright to Read stakeholder, I wanted to share this information with you in advance of any public announcement.

As part of this arrangement, we will move to 418 S. Washington Street and will officially begin operating as a program of The Campagna Center on September 1. Wright to Read's Jamie Barter and Luisa Reyes will transition to The Campagna Center along with the program.

Our decision was made after two years of thorough research, analysis, and deliberation of our program, our budget, and our effectiveness operating for the last five years as an independent organization. After considering options to merge with a number of organizations in the same field of service, returning to The Campagna Center stood out as the natural choice because of its excellent reputation in the community, similarities and synergies with The Campagna Center’s existing services, and potential opportunities to foster program expansion. The Board voted unanimously and enthusiastically to move forward with a transition back to The Campagna Center, which has also been endorsed by The Campagna Center’s Board of Directors.

The Wright to Read Board joins me in thanking all of you for your steadfast support over the years and we look forward to your continued involvement in this important program and partnership. Additional thanks goes first and foremost, to Peggy Morrison-Curtis, Wright to Read’s Executive Director, for her masterful orchestration of the research, analysis and documentation to support this transition. Special thanks also to Luisa and Jamie for keeping the program running effectively all during the Board’s deliberations and rising to the challenge of a major organizational move.

With great pride, the Wright to Read program has provided tutoring and mentoring services to elementary school children in Alexandria for the last 38 years. As we look forward to continuing our work through a renewed relationship with The Campagna Center, we also look forward to your continued engagement with this vital work. Your help has been and will be essential to our ongoing success.

Sincerely,

Jim Epstein, Chair
Wright to Read Board of Directors"
