This is my father — 1st Lt. Edwin Lothair Arnold, United States Marine Corps. He served with the Supply and Maintenance Company Detachment, 1st Combat Service Group, Fleet Marine Force — supporting the 1st Marine Division at Masan, Korea from 1952 to 1954. His MOS was 3520: Automotive Maintenance Officer. He commanded approximately 30 Marines whose sole mission was to keep the vehicles of the 1st Marine Division operational. In a war fought across brutal terrain in brutal conditions, if the vehicles stopped, the mission stopped. He went to Korea from New Castle, Indiana. He trained at Parris Island, Quantico, and Camp Pendleton before shipping out across the Pacific. He came home in late 1953. After his service, he spent 26 years at the Veterans Administration — eventually part of the effort to transform it into the Cabinet-level Department of Veterans Affairs. He was an advocate for veterans, twice over: once in uniform, and once in the halls of Washington. AVSOPS — the free directory of every veteran service organization in America — exists in part because of men like him, and the organizations that welcomed them home. If your family has a Korean War veteran, find the VSOs serving your county at avsops.com.
