Hispanic Americans live longer than White Americans or African Americans and a 2022 study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine showed that this increased life expectancy has been maintained from 1900 to 2019. This longevity paradox exists despite having a high prevalence of T2 diabetes and liver disease. Many contributing factors have been postulated, including social support, tight family support, and the noteworthy consideration of the protective effect of certain heritage foods. This session will discuss the science behind these heritage foods and their influence on the dietary quality of Hispanic subgroups, as well as dietary acculturation and eating patterns. Attendees will receive key nutrition and diabetes recommendations and strategies on how to use these foods to help improve health outcomes. This session will provide practical application tips. Last weekend. I presented at the American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions in New Orleans about culture.

One of the topics I covered was translations. As bilingual (Spanish) dietitian, I have been asked to translate documents and diets into Spanish.
Translation goes beyond words. It includes the essence of the culture. It includes traditions, customs, and habits. I include a slide that illustrates the point exactly.
* The movie 🎬 Friday the 13th is translated into Spanish as Martes 13.
* Martes in English is Tuesday. Tuesday the 13th. Is this a mistake?
* No. In Latin America Tuesday the 13th is the day of bad luck, not Friday. Friday is the day where you hang out with your friends, TGIF. So culturally, Tuesday the 13th makes more sense.
* There are also many variations of words and expressions among countries in Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America and within regions in one country.
* Best practice: Find certified translators, medical interpreters and test materials using reviewers from the communities you serve.
