Academy students collaborated with Shu-Chen Cuff from Gin Dance Company and Kinetic Artist Kevin Reese yesterday to create their own visual and physical art. Students learned the techniques of making kinetic sculptures as they each made their own sculptures that will be on display in the lobby of Capital One Hall for the upcoming Gin Dance Company production of "I Am Here" on November 12, 2022. They also learned choreography from the Gin Dance Company production and applied it to create their own dance connected to the story.

As we continue to celebrate Hispanic and Latin Heritage Month, we highlight Matthew Lopez who made history by becoming the first Latine to win the Tony Award for Best Play The Inheritance in 2020. In his acceptance speech, Lopez noted, "We constitute 19% of the United States' population, and we represent about 2% of the playwrights having plays on Broadway in the last decade. This must change."

Today, in celebration of Hispanic and Latin Heritage Month, we highlight Evelyn Cisneros-Legate. Evelyn is considered the first prima ballerina in the United States of Hispanic Heritage. She joined the company of the San Francisco Ballet in 1977 where she danced for 23 years. In 2020, she was appointed the new Director of the Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy. Her advice to dancers in an interview for Dance Teacher Magazine: "Use who you are as a strength to benefit ballet."

In honor of Hispanic and Latin Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15), MSA will highlight and celebrate artists of the LatinX community who have impacted and enriched our nation by their contributions. Take a look at our first artist, legendary percussionist of Latin Jazz, Latin R&B, and salsa: Benny Bonilla. Bonilla's skills as a member of the Peter Rodriguez band were instrumental in bringing Latin and African-American music sensibilities together. You may recognize their Latin beat remixed for Cardi B's remixed "I Like It". The sucess of both songs is a testament to a sound that has withstood the test of time and changing musical genres and cultures.
