Christopher Perrin and Carrie Smith Eben, “The Good Teacher” is an excellent book and a new addition to our summer faculty professional development! Thank you for writing it, friends. We’ve enjoyed rich conversations from chapters 1-2 thus far.

I (Allison) was moved once again by the line: “We simply cannot love those things over which we cannot linger.” So clear and so irrefutable.

Mrs. Jordan Gillick is a Savannah, Georgia native who graduated from the University of Georgia in 2009 with a Bachelor’s in Music Education, followed by a Master’s in Music Education from Kent State University in 2016, with an emphasis in general and choral music.

Jordan’s love of music has taken her around the world — she toured China, Germany, Austria, England, and Scotland with various singing groups during her college years. Closer to home, she has directed multiple musical theater camps for children and performed as Belle in a community production of Beauty and the Beast.

Her introduction to classical education came through homeschooling two of her children — and it didn’t take long to recognize that she had been drawn to its rhythms all along, even within more traditional teaching settings. Jordan brings that same spirit of inquiry to every classroom, inviting students to ask why and to discover the connections woven through everything they study.

At the heart of Jordan’s teaching is a deep desire to serve as the hands and feet of Jesus — pointing children to Christ and bringing glory to God in every area of life. PCC provides exactly the environment she was looking for.

Jordan grew up in an Army family and became an Army spouse when she married her husband in 2009. She has moved 16 times over the course of her life and currently calls Lorton home, where she lives with her three elementary-aged children. Outside the classroom, she enjoys slow cups of coffee, piano and voice lessons, volunteering, and game nights with her family. Her family attends Immanuel Bible Church.

Let’s now welcome Mrs. Sarah Talone to Team PCC!

Mrs. Sarah Talone grew up in northern New Jersey, where she was homeschooled from kindergarten through high school. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Cedarville University in Ohio and commissioned as a nurse in the U.S. Army, serving on active duty for five years in postings both overseas and stateside.

Mrs. Talone’s husband Andrew continues to serve in the Army, and together they have embraced the adventures and the community that military life brings. After 18 years of that life, the Talone family put down roots in Northern Virginia in 2021 and enrolled their children at Potomac Classical.

Mrs. Talone has loved learning alongside her children through PCC’s collaborative model and is deeply grateful for the friendships her family has found within this community. She is eager to step into her new role as Teaching Aide (and resident nurse 😉) and to invest in the students, teachers, and families that make PCC such a special place.

When she’s not in the classroom, you’ll find Mrs. Talone outdoors or cheering loudly for her four daughters at soccer games and swim meets.

We have more great news! Please welcome Mrs. Natalie Custer as our Lower School Art Teacher!

Originally from the greater Boston area, Mrs. Custer earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design from Wentworth Institute of Technology. Her professional career included working as a children’s footwear designer for companies such as Timberland and New Balance, followed by roles as a toy designer for Hasbro and Summer Infant. She later pursued freelance design work before transitioning to raising her young family full-time.

After marrying her husband, an active-duty Army officer, she embraced military life and the opportunities it provided to build community and serve others. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Lord graciously drew both her and her husband to faith in Christ, transforming the trajectory of their family. They were baptized together at Immanuel Bible Church in 2023, where they continue to serve in children’s ministry. Having experienced God’s transforming grace later in her own life, Mrs. Custer looks forward to helping students discover how their creativity can reflect God’s character and shine His light into dark places in this world.

Their son began attending PCC in first grade, and their daughter later joined the school in kindergarten. As both a PCC parent and kindergarten aide, Mrs. Custer developed a deep appreciation for the school’s mission, community, and commitment to classical education for young learners. Outside of school, she enjoys adventuring with her family, tending a salsa garden each year, and striving for the publication of Café Hoppers: Japan’s Hidden Gems, a board game of she designed.

Congrats to our 8th Graders for collectively scoring a CLT8 Lexile score of 1505! 92nd percentile!
The national average for 8th graders is 1060.

A Lexile score of 1505L is exceptionally high — here’s what it means in context:

Where it falls:
✅ A 1505 is well above the 12th grade national average (~1180L)
✅ It exceeds the typical college freshman reading level (~1300L)
✅ MetaMetrics research found that individuals typically encounter texts around 1300L in their initial postsecondary college and career experiences so 1505L is significantly above even that benchmark.

It’s approaching the level of complex academic, legal, and scientific texts:

📚 The Federalist Papers sit around 1500–1700L
📚 The Declaration of Independence is around 1350L
📚 Most classic literature (Shakespeare, Dickens) tends to cluster 1000–1300L

What it means practically: A student or reader at 1505L can comprehend very complex texts with sophisticated vocabulary, long sentence structures, and abstract ideas with strong fluency and minimal struggle. 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

As we pause this weekend to observe Memorial Day, we are reminded that the freedoms we enjoy, including the freedom to gather, to learn, and to build a community like ours at Potomac Classical, came at a profound cost. This weekend asks us to remember those who gave their lives in service to our country.

This is a moment to be deeply grateful, and to teach our children the meaning of duty, honor, and devotion to something greater than oneself. These are virtues that lie at the heart of a classical education, and they are best understood not in the abstract, but through the lives of real people who embodied them.

Seven hours of being in school together wasn’t enough! 1st grade —> 9th grade ladies choose to proactively continue their time together on the playground long after school dismissal.

We protect and encourage our students’ affections for high-quality friendships by enforcing a 100% tech-free campus 24/7. Not just in the classrooms. Not just during school hours. But just for little kids. No students (ours or otherwise), no childcare providers, no older siblings (and no peer pressure or FOMO) are welcomed or permitted on campus with smart-anything technology.

We promise that it’s not only possible but it’s a priority. ❤️
