Building Philadelphia’s Naval Future with Silvi Materials – Navy Yard, Pier 6A ⚓

Today, as part of the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association's America250: Concrete – The Foundation of Our Nation campaign, we are highlighting the Pier 6A replacement project at the Philadelphia Navy Yard – with ready mixed concrete supplied by NRMCA member Silvi Materials!

The project involved the complete demolition and replacement of the existing pier, with Silvi Materials working alongside customer GMAC to supply the ready mixed concrete. Once complete, Pier 6A will serve a unique purpose: supporting the shipment of U.S. Navy submarine components along the Delaware River on a transport shuttle fabricated by Rhoads Industries.

The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association is excited to welcome Paul Fucito as our new Senior Vice President of Communications and Marketing! 🎉

Paul brings more than 25 years of progressive leadership experience in marketing, communications, public affairs and brand strategy across government, higher education and nonprofit organizations to NRMCA.

He previously served as press secretary for the United States Patent and Trademark Office, where he led strategic communications, media relations and brand management for the $4 billion federal agency. Paul also served as a trusted advisor to C-suite leadership, chief spokesperson and media relations branch chief while directing award-winning national campaigns and major industry events such as the Consumer Electronics Show and the South by Southwest festival.

“Paul's background aligns exceptionally well with our goals of modernizing NRMCA’s communications function, elevating our visibility, strengthening our brand and more effectively telling the story of the ready mixed concrete industry and the value we deliver to our members,” said NRMCA President and CEO Jim Riley. "He will work closely with everyone across departments to support our communications and marketing needs and help ensure we present a unified, coherent message."

Two Iconic NFL Stadiums Rely on ! 🏈

As you stand in most modern baseball or football stadiums, you’re almost assured to see a combination of reinforced concrete and steel. But did you know that two of the oldest stadiums in the National Football League (NFL) are also built with concrete?

Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers, is the oldest continually operating NFL stadium. Opened in 1957 as City Stadium, it replaced the Packers’ previous home at Green Bay East High School. Informally known as New City Stadium, it was renamed in 1965 in memory of Packers founder, player and longtime head coach Earl “Curly” Lambeau. It was the first modern stadium built specifically for an NFL franchise and, with a capacity of 81,441, is the second largest stadium in the league.

Reinforced concrete and steel form the stadium’s core load-bearing bowl, ramps and multi-level concourses. Concrete also formed much of the original lower seating areas. The stadium debuted on September 29, 1957, with a 21–17 Packers victory over the rival Chicago Bears.

Originally built between 1922 and 1924 as a World War I memorial, Soldier Field is a multi-purpose stadium on Chicago’s Near South Side. Opened in 1924, it is the oldest stadium in the NFL and has served as the home of the Bears since 1971. Its grandstands and concourses are built primarily with reinforced structural concrete, while the historic exterior Doric colonnades use precast and cast-in-place concrete designed to resemble granite.

Soldier Field underwent a major interior reconstruction in 2002–2003. The historic columns were preserved while a modern steel-and-concrete bowl was built inside the original shell. Completed in just 20 months at a cost of $632 million, the renovation reduced seating capacity to 62,500 and ultimately contributed to the stadium losing its National Historic Landmark status in 2006.

The styles and designs of modern baseball and football stadiums have changed dramatically since these two historic icons were built, but one thing has remained constant: when it comes to the foundations of our sports arenas, architects and designers continue to count on concrete!
