📚 GRANTS IN ACTION: What happens when an entire school reads the same book? At Alcoa High School, it became much more than a summer reading assignment!

This spring, the Alcoa City Schools Foundation awarded a grant to support Alcoa High School’s schoolwide summer reading initiative, Alcoa Reads, making it possible for students and employees across the school to read Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins together.

But the experience didn’t end with the last page. When students returned to school, AHS brought the book to life with a schoolwide mock Hunger Games, giving students the chance to compete, have fun, and connect over a story they had all shared.

We love seeing Foundation grants create opportunities that extend beyond the classroom and bring an entire school community together around learning. ❤️📖

Congratulations to the teachers and staff at Alcoa High School who dreamed up such a creative way to encourage reading and make literacy an experience students will remember!

Do you know someone who has made a lasting impact on Alcoa City Schools, our students, or our community? The Alcoa City Schools Foundation is now accepting nominations for the 2026 Legacy of Excellence Awards.

Nominations are open through June 28, 2026.

Award categories include:

🏆 Legacy of Excellence
Outstanding alumni of Alcoa High School or Charles M. Hall School

🏆 Legacy of Leadership
An Alcoa family that has made substantial contributions to the school system and community over time

🏆 Legacy of Partnership
An organization, business, or entity that has established a meaningful partnership with Alcoa City Schools

🏆 Legacy of Service
Individuals who have merited recognition for their long-standing service to Alcoa City Schools

🎓 Congratulations to the 2026 Ralph H. & Nelda Kidd Memorial Scholarship Recipient, Kenley Workman-Long! 🎓

The Alcoa City Schools Foundation is proud to recognize Kenley Workman-Long as this year's recipient of the Ralph H. & Nelda Kidd Memorial Scholarship.

Established in honor of Ralph and Nelda Kidd, two devoted Alcoa High School graduates and lifelong champions of education, community service, and the rich traditions of Alcoa, this scholarship celebrates students who exemplify those same values.

Kenley has distinguished herself both in and out of the classroom, maintaining a 4.14 GPA while balancing involvement in varsity tennis, DECA, HOSA, and service through the Emerald Youth Foundation. She volunteers through her church, serves individuals experiencing homelessness, supports children in underserved communities, and even gives back by helping her father coach youth basketball.

After graduation, Kenley plans to attend school to become an esthetician and ultimately pursue her dream of owning her own business.

Congratulations, Kenley! Your hard work, servant leadership, and dedication to your community make you a deserving recipient of this scholarship. We look forward to seeing all that you accomplish in the years ahead.

The City of Alcoa is introducing a new event called Movies in the Stadium. This event will include a free showing of Mary Poppins (1964)! There will also be local food trucks at the event for those who would like to snack while they watch. We hope to see you there on Tuesday, May 12, starting at 7:00 p.m. at the Alcoa High School Football Stadium! Stay tuned for more dates to be released as this series continues.
