Time is running out for a 5-year Server Permit. The TABC is changing to a 2-year permit on January 1, 2025.

Make sure you complete your TABC Server Permit application (RLPS), pay the TABC application fee AND complete your training course ASAP. Your permit must be issued by Dec. 31 to have a 5-year expiration otherwise, Server Permits issued in 2025 expire after 2 years.

If you have a TABC license to sell alcohol take note!
As mandated by the 2023 Public Chapter 423, all businesses selling hemp-derived cannabinoid products in Tennessee must obtain a license from the Tennessee Department of Agriculture by July 1, 2025. If your business plans to sell these products and has not yet applied for a license, we strongly encourage you to begin the application process immediately to comply with state law. Please note that selling hemp-derived cannabinoid products without the proper license may result in penalties.

While not stated, it is implied that failure to comply with Public Chapter 423 could imperil the status of an establishment’s TABC license (e.g. a Wine in Retail Food Stores license).

Are you hearing rumors about a 2-year Server Permit? Yes, it is true. Effective January 1, 2025, the TABC will issue Server Permits that expire every 2 YEARS! All current 5-year Permits remain valid until their expiration date. At the time of Server Permit renewal after January 1, the next permit will follow the 2 year expiration rule. We suggest anyone that has a permit that expires in early 2025 to renew early (before end of 2024) to obtain another 5-year permit, otherwise, any permit issued on or after January 1, 2025 will expire every 2 years.

Process is the same:
1. Fill out a Server Permit application on the TABC website (tn.gov/abc) using RLPS and pay the application fee.
2. Purchase and complete the Server Permit training course which is available on the TopShelf website 24/7 (topshelfedu.com).

Please note: Training must be completed several days before Dec. 31 to ensure the TABC issues the permit in 2024. We recommend finishing training before Christmas to allow time for the TABC to process around the holidays.
