Low Writing at El Chante: Free Community Writing Workshop
Low writing is a writing circle for the community. It's free, open to everybody, and inclusive.
Low Writing was born from a meeting of minds between Bianca Encinas, myself (Manuel González), Joseluis, and Richard “Dickie” Sawtelle. gathered in sacred intention to create a space where Chicanos and Nuevomexicanos could speak their truths, write their wounds into wonder, and perform their lived experiences beneath ancestral stars. It was Dickie, Old Town’s own son and co-founder of the Black Be

Please vote for El Chante: Casa de Cultura LLC This is home. El Chante is where our community comes to remember who we are rooted in truth, culture, and spirit. This is where our artists create from lived experience. Where poetry is felt. Where writing becomes a release. A reckoning. A return. We gather here for workshops, for ceremony, for conversation that actually means something. We show up for each other. We hold space for healing. We tell our stories out loud so they stop living quietly inside us. This is a place where authenticity is required. Where we celebrate each other in truth. In growth. In the courage it takes to be seen. El Chante is where we become better versions of ourselves together. Where art becomes medicine. Where community becomes family. If you believe in spaces that uplift, that heal, that give our people a voice, then please support El Chante Casa de Cultura and vote. This matters. We matter. And this space is worth fighting for.

Arts & Crafts for the kids!
Featuring performances by some of the dopest artists in New Mexico,
and a special appearance by the newly named New Mexico State Poet Laureate, Manuel González,
who will be sharing poetry in solidarity and support of this movement.
Every winter, hip hop artists, youth leaders, poets, musicians, gardeners, moms, dads, and community organizers from across New Mexico unite for one purpose:
to raise warmth, love, and dignity for our unsheltered relatives.
Since 2019, we’ve collected thousands of jackets and cold-weather essentials, all given directly, hand-to-hand, to those sleeping on our city streets.
And we’re not done.
Not until no one is left out in the cold.
We give what little we have, because love is the first revolution.
Bring what you can:
Hoodies, jackets, sweaters (new or clean)
Beanies, gloves, scarves, hand warmers (new or clean)
Socks & underwear (brand new only)
Shoes (new or lightly used)
Hygiene items (brand new only)
All donations will be handed out the following week in the International District, hand to hand, heart to heart.
Event Date: November 15th
Location: La Plazita Institute
Much love and respect to all the artists, organizers, and neighbors who’ve kept this work alive year after year.
Pull up. Bring your people.
Support local artists and young folks using their gifts to serve the community that raised them.

Albuquerque, get ready.
This Friday night, The Lab (403 Mountain Rd NW, 87102) becomes a temple of word and rhythm. Come witness an evening of raw, soul-stirring poetry featuring three of Burque’s brightest voices: Marcial Delgado, Sarita Sol González, and Manuel González, the newly named New Mexico State Poet Laureate.
Hosted by the incomparable Trae Dahl, this isn’t just a reading, it’s an initiation. Expect laughter, truth, and language charged with spirit. Expect to leave changed.
Bring your heart, your friends, your open mind.
Doors open, the words will do the rest.
Let’s make the desert sing
Savannah Rodriguez (who recently had a birthday!) is one of Albuquerque's best poets, and this performance of her poem "Spanish Speakers' from the Team Finals (as a member of the Voices of the Barrio team) on our Champions Stage at the 2025 Chicharra Poetry Slam Festival definitely makes it easy to see why!
As always, our gratitude to Sopapilla Productions for capturing the magic!
For one spooky night and one night only! You can break one of slam’s most holiest rule! You can use another poet’s work in a slam; But not just any ol’ poet....It has to be a DEAD poet (cue the creepy music)! Let’s honor the greats before us and read poems from some of our favorite ghosts! You know what they say, “a poet lives on forever through the the words they leave behind”
Round 1: Dead Poet’s Round
