Once in a while I post this quote of mine, which represents the underlying philosophy of all the work I do with autistic people who struggle.
Partly because it's so important to avoid the trap we've spent the last century falling into- of defining autism exclusively by its weaknesses rather than by its overall characteristics, leading people to see autism as "the bad guy" and something synonymous with the person's every perceived shortcoming. (Which in turn leads people to want to cure autism itself, throwing the metaphorical baby out with the bathwater, rather than help the actual person with their actual autism-related struggles and keeping their character and personality intact.)

[Black text on yellow-white background, reading:
“I don’t want to turn an autistic person into a non-autistic person.
I want to turn an autistic person who struggles into an autistic person who doesn’t struggle.” -Chris Bonnello]

We're officially halfway threw 2023 which makes this the perfect time to start thinking about how those new year's resolutions went (even if it the answer is not well 😅)

Setting new goals, planning how to achieve them, building healthy habits, and maintaining your goals are all things that require strong Executive Function skills.

Summer is a great time for your child to start Executive Function coaching as our coaches provide tools and strategies that will help your child tackle those goals for the year and prepare them for the new school year. Learn how we can help: https://bit.ly/3NSC5lm

Only looking at observable behavior (surface behaviors), doesn't tell you anything about what's actually causing the behavior.

You start solving problems when you start diggin'!

Image Description: Title: The “Why of A Behavior”. Two holes with a man digging in each hole: First hole is shallow with subtitle “The old way of thinking”. Underneath are the words “defiant”, “escape”, “avoiding” and “attention seeking”. Second hole is very deep with the subtitle “A necessary paradigm shift” (supported by brain science). Underneath are the words: sensory processing”, “emotional regulation”, “motor challenges”, “learning disabilities”, “trauma”. The function of any behavior is much deep than phrases like attention seeking. This shallow analysis will lead to using rewards and punishments to get compliance. Want to improve behavior? Solve the problem. How do you solve the problem? Dig Deeper. Greg Santucci, Occupational Therapist.
