Every day, New Mexico families make important decisions about child care, housing, groceries, health care, education, and making ends meet.

The people making decisions about those same issues should understand those experiences firsthand.

Monday’s unsigned Supreme Court ruling on mail in ballots does not impact our work or our mission of envisioning a thriving New Mexico or redefining political power for New Mexico communities. When we came together to fight for the New Mexico Voting Rights Act, we knew the importance and the power of absentee ballots and mail in voting. Many of our communities across the state rely on mail in voting to cast their ballot in November.

That does not change with this ruling.

SCOTUS issued an unsigned ruling that does not speak to the legality of the Executive Order but stated that it was too soon to tell if any harm was done to any State. The Courts removed the district court order that paused USPS’s rulemaking to implement the Executive Order - not the protections that keeps the process of mail in voting. To be clear, any attempt of disenfranchising voters is a clear attack on democracy. Seeking to overrule the Constitution to unlawfully control elections is not permitted - States control our elections.

There are more injunctions and more lawsuits coming.

The recent executive order concerning USPS stands as one of several strategic maneuvers—including baseless allegations and intimidation of the local officials managing our elections—intended to strip power from the electorate and consolidate it under Trump.

We want to thank our Secretary of State for standing with New Mexicans and not handing over our voter information, despite the unlawful pressure to do so from the Trump administration. As expected, a federal judge stood by our Secretary of State’s decision and dismissed the Department of Justice’s lawsuit claiming noncompliance.

We know that our democracy is under attack yet we remain committed to the people of New Mexico and our right to vote. We will continue our GOTV efforts and urge partners to be aware of any materials that will be released to help with talking to voters and how they can still vote by mail.

It's simple. Amendment 4 would allow legislators to receive compensation that is tied to New Mexico's median household income, not an unlimited salary.

🗣Public service shouldn't require personal wealth.

Today, many New Mexicans can't afford to leave work to serve in the Legislature - even when they'd make outstanding representatives.

Amendment 4 would make it possible for more everyday people to bring their real-life experiences to the Roundhouse.Because our communities deserve to be represented by people who understand them. ✊ 💗

A new case study from Dēmos tells the story of how OLÉ, alongside a multiracial coalition of parents, educators, and community organizations, won universal child care in New Mexico.

In 2008, child care workers in our state made $10/hour. Parents spent up to 80% of their income on care. The Permanent Fund was "untouchable."

Today, every NM family regardless of income has access to no-cost child care and this win didn't come from polite persuasion. It came from organizing.
