In English pronunciation, double letters are important because they tell us if the preceding vowel is SHORT. For instance, the A in "latter" is short because of the two T's. If we take one of the T's out, the word becomes "later," which is pronounced with a long-A.

My favorite area of teaching is pronunciation. One of the most interesting and significant facts is about the SILENT-E, as in words "Tate", "bake", and "like". My students are always baffled by why English has the unimportant silent-E at the end of words. They are amazed to hear its importance!
