Students! Go pick up a FREE book!

St. John’s College is inviting Albuquerque high school students to step away from their screens, pick up a real book, and join a conversation about reading during ABQ Reads, a two-day community event taking place from Saturday, Sept. 12–Sunday, Sept. 13, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. During the event, St. John’s College will purchase a classic paperback for every high school-aged student who visits one of three participating Albuquerque independent bookstores: Books On the Bosque, Bookworks Albuquerque, and Page 1 Bookstore.

Students can choose from classic paperbacks available at each bookstore, with St. John’s covering the cost. For students unsure of what a classic book is, or whether their selected book is a classic, St. John’s community members will be on hand for lively conversations exploring the qualities and nature of classics—which are not easy to define but fun to discuss.

Throughout the weekend, members of the St. John’s community will be joined by the popular book content creator and New Mexican , and Albuquerque-focused content creators Becky Woods, known online as , and Amanda Getchell Stevenson, aka . Community leaders are invited to attend and talk with creators and attendees about the importance and joy of reading.

📣 We Need Coaches & Sponsors for CASE CLOSED: Legal Debate! ⚖️

Amy Biehl High School’s Second Annual CASE CLOSED: Legal Debate is coming up on Saturday, September 19 at 10:00 a.m., and we’re looking for attorneys, law school students, and legal professionals to join us!

⚖️ Volunteer as a Coach

Coaches will work with a team of 2–3 high school students during the event to help them research a legal question and prepare a short argument. No advance preparation is required! You’ll meet your team at the event and have 30 minutes to help them develop their argument before they present to a panel of judges.

🤝 Become a Sponsor

We’re also seeking law firms, businesses, and community partners to sponsor student teams. Your support will provide students with a unique opportunity to build confidence, practice public speaking, strengthen critical thinking skills, and explore careers in law and civic engagement.

Representative Garratt has been one of the New Mexico Legislature’s strongest and most consistent champions for New Mexico’s public charter schools. She has shown up for our sector, listened to school leaders, and stood with students and families when it mattered.

This is an important opportunity for charter leaders, board members, families, and supporters to show up for someone who has shown up for us.
