The Top Executives series continues with a spotlight on accounting, highlighting alumni leaders making an impact across business and beyond.

Brad Preber (BBA '82) discovered his path to accounting through curiosity, a conversation with a professor and a willingness to embrace new opportunities. That decision led to a distinguished career, culminating in his role as CEO and Chairman of Grant Thornton LLP, one of the nation's largest accounting and advisory firms.

A graduate of the Anderson School of Management, now The James & Gail Ellis School of Business Leadership, Brad built his leadership philosophy around service, mentorship and helping others succeed. Even in retirement, he continues to give back through board leadership and his longtime support of UNM.

As Brad shares, "A lot of success is about curiosity, resilience, and humility. No matter what you decide to pursue, you'll go through many changes in your life and career, and adapting to those changes takes resilience."

Our Top Executives series continues with a spotlight on accounting, highlighting alumni leaders making an impact across business and beyond.

Emily Wilson (BBA ’16, MACCT ’17) discovered her passion for accounting at the Anderson School of Management, now The James & Gail Ellis School of Business Leadership, where a teaching assistant role helped shape the people-centered leadership approach that continues to guide her career.

Today, Emily is a Principal at CliftonLarsonAllen (CLA), specializing in serving state and local government clients. She remains committed to mentoring the next generation of professionals, helping students navigate the same journey she once did.

As Emily puts it: "Accounting, and the business world in general are people-driven professions. Build relationships with your classmates, your professors, and the professionals you meet along the way. Those connections will stay with you throughout your career and can open so many doors."

Our Top Executives alumni series is back, this time featuring Ellis alumni leading across the accounting profession. Over the coming weeks, we will highlight alumni whose careers showcase leadership, service and the broad impact of accounting across industries.

Carol Cochran (BBA ’84, EMBA ’06) built an accomplished career in accounting before taking on an unexpected new challenge: becoming an attorney.

What began as a major she initially resisted at the Anderson School of Management, now The James & Gail Ellis School of Business Leadership, became the foundation for more than 40 years of leadership, service and professional growth.

Throughout her career, Carol helped lead and grow multiple business areas at REDW LLC while developing a leadership philosophy centered on servant leadership and creating opportunities for others to succeed.

Today, Carol has embraced a new chapter in law, bringing the same curiosity and commitment to growth that defined her accounting career.

“Everything is changing so fast, that really learning how to change at the same time, how to reinvent yourself, how to continuously improve your skills, and broaden your areas of interest are a good thing.”

Summer may be in full swing, but The James and Gail Ellis School of Business Leadership faculty continue to lead important conversations around the world.

Distinguished Professor Xin (Robert) Luo recently served as a keynote speaker at the 37th International Conference on Information Management, hosted by National Taipei University of Technology.

The conference explored the theme “AI Agents Leading the Future: From Conversation to Action.” Luo’s keynote, “The Epistemological Crisis of Generative AI: Hallucinations, Trust, and the Future of IS Research,” examined timely questions around generative AI, trust and the future of information systems research.

An internationally recognized scholar in information systems and management, Luo was recently ranked No. 1 globally among information systems scholars in the AIS Senior Scholars’ list of premier journals for 2023-25.

His research and leadership continue to shape global conversations about technology, business and society.

Spring 2026 was a record placement season for the UNM Center for Sales & Business Development.

This spring, 44 sales students secured full-time positions, internships and part-time roles with outstanding companies in New Mexico and beyond. These achievements, along with many others, were celebrated at the Sales Center’s end-of-year awards, where students were recognized for career outcomes, scholarships, sales competitions and hands-on applied projects.

Students also gained real-world experience through sales projects, role-play competitions and client outreach, including a project with Rio Grande where students contacted more than 1,800 customers and scheduled more than 100 appointments.

Congratulations to Dominique Ortega, who was named second runner-up for the UNM Student Employee of the Year Award this spring.

Presented by the UNM Student Employment Office, this highly competitive award recognizes outstanding student employees from across the university. Dominique, who has earned both her BBA and MBA from The James and Gail Ellis School of Business Leadership, was recognized for the impact she made as a teaching and research assistant for Andrea Hetrick.

“Some students leave an impact that extends beyond the classroom, and Dominique Ortega is certainly one of them. As my teaching and research assistant, Dominique has played a key role in supporting students, improving course processes, assisting with complex research projects and helping to create a collaborative and supportive environment for everyone around her. She leads with initiative, communicates with compassion and tackles every task with professionalism and attention to detail,” said Andrea Hetrick, professor at Ellis.

Congrats again, Dominique, on this well-deserved recognition and on earning your MBA. We are grateful for the impact you have made and excited to see what comes next.
