All public schools must follow state law. Public charter schools face an additional layer of accountability. They operate under a performance contract with an authorizer that monitors academic, financial, and operational performance. If a charter school fails to meet that contract, it can be closed.

Charter school kids are public school kids. Their schools should be funded like it.

Too many New Mexico public charter schools are forced to use dollars meant for classrooms to cover basic facility costs.

That means less money for teachers, learning and the supports kids need to thrive.

New Mexico can fix this. A fair, predictable facilities funding system would help ensure every public school kid has a safe, adequate place to learn.
