Real-World Science in Action at nex+Gen Academy!
We were excited to welcome Dr. Menake Piyasena, Chemistry Professor from NM Tech, to speak with our Chemistry and Environmental Science students!
Dr. Piyasena shared fascinating insights on the impact of plastics in our environment—and even in the human body. He also introduced students to the innovative techniques he and his research team are using to tackle this global challenge, including the use of acoustic waves.
Students also learned about exciting education and research opportunities at NM Tech, opening doors to future pathways in science and engineering.
A big thank you to Dr. Neuber for coordinating this opportunity, and to Dr. Piyasena for inspiring our students and sharing your expertise with our community!

Nex+Gen Academy had a truly successful Alumni Day today! It was wonderful to see old friends reconnect, share stories, and reminisce about their time at nex+Gen. Alumni from our very first graduating class in 2013, all the way through the Class of 2025, were in attendance, making it a special and meaningful event across generations.
A heartfelt thank you to Ms. Floyd for organizing such a fantastic event, and to our generous parents who donated food for the banquet. Your support helped make the day memorable for everyone involved.

The Battle Bots competition is only a week away, and nex+Gen engineering students are hard at work making their final adjustments. After weeks of designing, building, and testing, teams are fine-tuning their robots to make sure they’re ready for the arena. We can’t wait to see their creativity, engineering skills, and competitive spirit on display!

Sustainability Expo
In this solution-oriented project, Environmental Science and Statistics (ESS) students were truly project designers. They chose the topic they explored as well as the action they took to learn more about it. Some interviewed an expert, others conducted an experiment, some built a small-scale prototype, and others did something else! They used their learning through research and taking action to develop a proposal - their answer to the driving question, "How should we become a more sustainable society?" Last week Seniors presented their proposals to 10th and 11th graders and parents. Facilitator: Laura Ornelas, [email protected]. AP Precalculus - Sine of Sound Project
Our AP Precalculus students used what they know about sine waves to determine the frequency of a musical note. They were then tasked with matching the frequency of the note by filling a bottle with water and blowing across the top. To see how well they did, we played the C major scale and “Mary Had A Little Lamb.” Want to learn more? Schedule at tour at [email protected].

Congratulations to the first-ever nex+Gen Science Bowl team! On Saturday, March 7, our team competed in the New Mexico Regional Science Bowl at Albuquerque Academy, which included 17 teams from 10 schools across the state. This fast-paced trivia competition tests students' knowledge and problem-solving skills through questions in physics, math, biology, and a wide range of other science topics. To prepare for this, the team has been practicing and studying all year under the direction of Mr. Goodman . We faced off against teams from Eldorado High School, Volcano Vista High School, and Albuquerque Academy. Although we didn't advance to the later stages, we had a great time representing our school and sharing a love of science with our peers!
