USDA Confirms First Case of New World Screwworm in a Dog in Lea County, New Mexico, Fourth Case in Texas | Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service 06/09/2026

The USDA has confirmed New Mexico’s first case of New World screwworm in a dog from Lea County. New World screwworm is a flesh-eating parasite that can affect livestock, pets, wildlife, and, in rare cases, humans. Animal owners are encouraged to regularly check animals for wounds or unusual infestations and report concerns to their veterinarian immediately. Early detection is critical to preventing spread and protecting animal health.

Your input is important!

NMNPC is collecting statewide, New Mexico–specific malpractice premium and coverage information from nurse practitioners across New Mexico. We are hearing increasing concern about changes in malpractice premiums and shifting coverage requirements, including participation in the New Mexico Patient Compensation Fund (PCF). These changes can affect workforce stability, practice sustainability, and patient access to care, especially in rural and underserved communities where NPs are often a primary access point for care.
