Planning for summer professional development is underway--consider learning more about place as text pedagogy in 2023:
This project of NCHC’s Place as Text Committee takes participants to Charleston, South Carolina, to investigate the intersection of its contested history, cultural tourism, environment, and economic development. Charleston, founded in 1670, is home to the first and largest historic district in America and is credited with beginning the historic preservation movement in the United States. The city has celebrated its status as one of Condé Nast magazine’s best tourist destinations in the world, while National Geographic cites it as the former slave-trade capital of North America. Institute participants will interrogate these contrasting narratives using City as Text™ to uncover, interpret, and analyze the tensions that are pertinent to disciplines across the humanities, social sciences, and sciences.

Planning for summer professional development is underway--consider learning more about place as text pedagogy in 2023:
This Institute provides participants with an opportunity to see the city of Pittsburgh through new eyes. Using Place as Text pedagogy, participants will “read” this city through its unique cultural geography. Pride, pierogis, personality, grit, and peoples create the patchwork that is Pittsburgh. From repurposed steel mills to the Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh – marked by the convergence of three rivers – has continually defined itself through – and sometimes against – its industrial history. The manner in which cities remake themselves in the past and present will be considered. This NCHC Place as Text Faculty Institute invites participants to uncover and navigate through and across the juxtapositions found in this city, one bridge at a time.
