The Rocks Tell Stories: Exploring New Mexico Through Geology
Written by Jim Daly, Bosque School Teacher

During Immersives, the students in the "The Rocks Tell Stories" class explored the connection between geology and the ecological, human, and cultural history of New Mexico.

With field trips to a variety of locations, including the Sandia Peak, Petroglyphs National Monument, Chaco Canyon, NM Tech and the UNM Paleontology Lab, the eighteen 6th and 7th graders worked with one another and with our community partners to first build their understanding of foundational geologic concepts, such as rock identification, the law of superposition and the rock cycle, and to then apply that knowledge to the patterns they observed in the geology of our different field sites.

The students encountered a number of geologic mysteries, such as the Great Unconformity, a textbook example of an angular unconformity, limestone layers deposited in a marine environment yet found 10,300' at the summit of the Sandias, and evidence of a massive rift ripping New Mexico in half.

Along the way, the students also discovered the significance of the petroglyphs etched by the Ancestral Puebloans into the patina of the West Mesa lava flows, and had the opportunity to see how X-ray diffraction and electron microscopes are used to document the structure of minerals and of rocks of both an Earthly origin as well as rocks of an extraterrestrial origin.

Perhaps most profound was piecing together the fossilized bones of 80-million-year-old dinosaurs and investigating the mudstone deposited in southeastern North America on the very day the meteor struck the Gulf off the coast of the Yucatan 66 million years ago, leading to the demise of the non-avian dinosaurs and millions of other species.

Upper School students participating in the immersive Engineering the Future spent the last two weeks exploring all things STEM. They designed and built robots, explored the principles of physics and motion, learned about electricity, and visited local science and engineering organizations, including the UNM School of Engineering, Amazon, CNM FUSE Makerspace, and Roadrunner 3D.

Every year, Bosque School 8th-graders are excited to partner with Armijo Elementary students for our yearlong Reading Buddy program. To mark the end of another school year, students and their buddies gathered for a special event. This meaningful partnership is often shared as one of the most memorable Bosque School middle school experiences.

MRC Immersive wrapped up with an exciting helicopter visit from UNM and Presbyterian HALL, the Healthcare Advanced Learning Lab! This is one of Bosque School’s most popular immersive experiences and gives students the opportunity to earn first-responder certification through CNM.

Throughout the immersive, students showed incredible focus, curiosity, and teamwork. Congratulations to the MRC Immersive cohort!
