Introducing our May Bonus Animal, the Canada goose!
Bonus Animals are animals that you don’t expect to see at the ABQ BioPark, but they show up anyway! They aren't official residents or in human care. They choose to visit or live here on their own, and spotting them makes every visit a little different.
Canada geese are found year-round here in Albuquerque. They feed on plants, seeds and berries. Females build nests near water, slightly higher than their surroundings. It takes less than two months after hatching for the goslings to grow adult feathers and learn to fly! 🐥
When you visit the ABQ BioPark, you're visiting these animals' home. Please remember to be respectful and never chase or harass the Bonus Animals!

Caterpillar update featured in the New York Times
The Sacramento Mountains checkerspot butterfly is one of New Mexico’s rarest native species and a powerful reminder of why conservation work matters.
The New York Times recently shared the story of the last known Sacramento Mountains checkerspot caterpillar in human care at the ABQ BioPark. Sadly, the caterpillar did not wake from its winter dormancy this spring.
This is a heartbreaking outcome for everyone who has followed this caterpillar and cared for this fragile species. At the same time, its time in human care gave our team and partners a rare opportunity to learn more about a butterfly that very few people have ever studied so closely.
The Sacramento Mountains checkerspot has not been seen in the wild since 2022, but it may still exist. Field surveys will continue this summer, and we remain hopeful that additional individuals may be found.
We are grateful to everyone working to protect this butterfly and the unique mountain meadow habitat it calls home.

Conservation Policy in 30 seconds or less: Endangered Species Act
As a proud member of the Aquarium Conservation Partnership (ACP), we’re working to protect the Endangered Species Act from harmful changes that would place the species we all care about at greater risk of extinction. Check the pinned comment to learn more about ACP.
