Introducing August's Bonus Animal, the ladder-backed woodpecker!

This amazing bird has four toes, with two pointing forward and two pointing back. This allows it to cling to surfaces easily, and you can often see these woodpeckers sideways and upside down on trees and in bushes! They mostly eat insect larvae by probing, prying and tapping with their beaks. The ladder-backed woodpecker can be found at the ABQ BioPark year-round.

Males have a distinctive red patch on the top of their heads, while females do not. Have you seen this pair in the Africa area of the Zoo?

Several local pollinator species, like this Capitan Mountains southwest fritillary, were recently assessed by our staff and published on the IUCN Red List! These assessments improve our understanding of extinction risk and identify conservation priorities, which helps us protect biodiversity. 🦋
