OCALS Learning Services - Providing Literacy Services to the families of Orleans County.
There are many people in Orleans County who speak and understand English, but cannot read or write. The reading and writing skills of some of these individuals are so inadequate that their limited literacy is a problem in their everyday lives. Some never had the opportunity to attend school regularly. Others find their reading and writing abilities insufficient for the demands of this changing world. Whatever the cause of their illiteracy, OCALS needs your help in teaching these individuals to read and write. OCALS recruits and trains tutors to teach Basic Literacy or English as a Second Language skills to individuals who want to learn to read, write, or improve basic literacy skills. We provide goal-oriented tutoring to these individuals, enabling them to achieve personal goals through literacy. This tutoring is provided one-to-one or in small groups, at no charge to the student.
Mission: The mission of OCALS Learning Services is to promote and foster literacy in Orleans County and contiguous areas by utilizing volunteers. There services will be available free of charge to all those in need regardless of gender, religious affiliation or race.

Earth Day planting ceremony at ABCD at Holley.
This Friday, ABCD at Holley will be celebrating Earth Day by planting apple trees donated by Nesbitt Fruit Farms of Waterport. The children will be decorating stones to place around the trees, and the planting ceremony will be used to teach the children about the importance of protecting and renewing our environment. OCALS and ABCD at Holley are "united" in teaching goals as we tutor some of the students at the school, provide literacy services to the parents, and arrange for adults to go in and read to the children.

What a great Read Across America Day at ABCD at Holley on Mar. 2, 2016! Readers from our Grandma/Grandpa reading program helped the children celebrate this day, (which is also Dr. Seuss's birthday), by singing Happy Birthday to Dr. Seuss, helping the children recite a Reader's Oath, giving out Dr. Seuss bookmarks and stickers, and of course....reading Dr. Seuss books! Thank you to the readers for helping make this such a fun day for the children. Thank you to the school for letting us come in and celebrate, and to the teachers for letting us disrupt their schedules. And thank you to Wegmans in Brockport for donating such delicious cupcakes and juice boxes for this birthday celebration!!!
