"Talent is everywhere, opportunity is not." - Matthew Randazzo ’00

From a first-generation Albion student to leading a $2 billion regional foundation — Matthew Randazzo '00 has spent his career opening doors for others the way strangers once opened them for him. He's helped direct hundreds of millions of dollars toward education and affordable housing, all in the name of breaking cycles of intergenerational poverty he once lived through himself.

As CEO of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, Matthew’s work is proof that intentional investment changes lives. He says it all started at Albion, where a faculty mentor and an academic major helped him find his "why."

Tiny wings, big adventure. 🐦

Baby bird banding activity with Summer Bridge course BIOL 189: Biology for Non-Biologists led by professor emerita of biology Dr. Dale Kennedy and professor of biology Marcella Cervantes. 🪶

Students received a hands-on lesson on nesting, feeding, and the importance of tracking and studying birds through banding, connecting directly with classroom lessons on lifecycles while exploring the gorgeous meadows surrounding the Whitehouse Nature Center. 🪹

All banding, marking, and sampling is conducted under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the U.S. Geological Survey's Bird Banding Lab (BBL), and a state authorized Scientific Collecting Permit issued by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

First-year participants in Summer Bridge will be on their way to earning college credit before fall semester even begins, and that’s just the cherry on top. To learn more about our residential Summer Bridge program for incoming Britons, visit albion.edu/bridge ☀️

Can a robot learn to see, think, and sort? 🤖

Nathan Penfield ’28 built one that can. His project, “A Shape Sorting Robot Using Computer Vision and Robot Kinematics,” uses Python and computer vision to teach a robotic arm to identify shapes and put them exactly where they belong. Presented at the Elkin R. Isaac Research Symposium, his project pushed him to turn classroom programming into real-world movement — and to explain complex tech to a non-technical audience along the way. A computer science major from Charlotte, Mich., Nathan developed the project with faculty sponsor Mauricio Marengoni.

What started as classroom code became a real robot in motion — proof that Albion students turn ideas into impact from day one. Learn more about student research and the Albion College experience at albion.edu/elkin. 💫

How do you preserve a history at risk of being hidden by time? 🪦

For Abby Dombrowski ’26 the answer started in a cemetery — clearing ivy, uncovering headstones, and using quantitative historical research to examine and preserve the stories of Breslau’s 20th-century Jewish community. Presented at the Elkin R. Isaac Research Symposium, her project, “Burial and Exodus,” draws on her history and mathematics double major, participation in the Holocaust Studies Service Learning Project, and guidance from faculty mentor Jocelyn McWhirter.

As an undergraduate, Albion Britons can contribute to life-changing research. Learn more about student research and the Albion College experience at albion.edu/elkin. 🌿

Summer Bridge isn’t just about academics—it’s about building community and falling in love with the place you’re calling home. 💜

Students enrolled in the English 189 course, “Vanishing Archives: Preserving Memory in a World That Won’t Stand Still,” walked the streets of Albion to learn more about the particular buildings and spaces that have played a large role in Albion’s cultural and community identity. Along the way, they also stopped to support a local lemonade stand from a few budding entrepreneurs. 🍋

More than a field trip, this experience helps fostering a sense of place and belonging that’ll carry them through their entire college experience. Thank you to Frost Historic Restoration for the guided tour!

What would it take to make Black male mentoring programs more effective? Tyland Martin ‘26 investigated. 🎓

Black urban male mentoring programs exist across the country with a clear mission: provide socio-emotional support, expand access to knowledge and skills, and empower low-income, vulnerable Black male youth. With guidance from faculty mentor Ari McCaskill, Tyland’s research sought to answer why these programs historically haven’t achieved the impact they aimed for and offer tangible solutions. Tyland’s work exemplifies what it means to be an engaged scholar committed to understanding and improving systems that affect communities.

At Albion, students don’t just consume information—they interrogate it. With faculty mentors supporting them, they ask the questions that matter and conduct the research that can inform real solutions.

Service snapshots with Albion College AmeriCorps! 📸

28 Britons are wrapping up a summer of service throughout the greater Albion community. They dedicated their time and talents to strengthening the community and building meaningful relationships with local partners. Students made an impact through Tech Savvy Seniors in partnership with the Albion College Community Collaborative (AC3), as well as placements with the Community Table of Albion, Albion Community Gardens, the Albion Economic Development Corporation, the Albion Community Foundation, and Families First Learning Center.

Developing communication skills, building work ethic, connecting across generations, and being of service. Sounds like a Brit summer! 💜☀️
