Earlier today, July 9, 2022, a person reported seeing what they thought was an alligator while hiking in the Whitehouse Nature Center. College staff investigated but did not locate an alligator. The College is working with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to determine the next steps.

In the meantime, we urge everyone to stay away from the area while the College works with authorities to locate and remove the alligator.

At the direction of the City Council, MDOT has changed the lanes on Michigan Ave from a 4-lane road to a 2-lane road. The center 2 lanes are now the only travel lanes on Michigan Ave. The remainder of the road is for parking. It is a violation of Michigan Motor Vehicle code MCL 257.637 to drive or pass outside of the solid white lines. This includes areas of intersection where there is no white line. When making a right turn you should turn from inside the white line at the intersection and not cross into the parking lane before turning. ADPS officers will be out educating drivers to the changes when they see violations occur.

Good Morning:

Campus Safety has received inquiries this morning about reports of gunfire on campus last night. Albion Public Safety was called to investigate a report of fireworks near campus at 4:30 A.M. this morning. They did find several spent fireworks on the railroad tracks across from the fraternities. This is the source of the noise that many heard on campus and thought it might be gunshots.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for our area until 7 p.m. tomorrow, Feb. 3 (albion.edu/weather-alert). A potential of 10-14 inches of snow is forecast.

The snow and reduced visibility will make driving hazardous, therefore, Albion College will close many of its non-essential offices at 4 p.m. today, Feb. 2, 2022 and reopen at 10 a.m. tomorrow, Feb. 3, 2022. Classes will continue virtually. Students, faculty, and staff: please see your email for more information. Stay safe, Brits!

We stand together with our Black students, alumni, faculty, staff and broader community members in condemning the recent acts of racism on campus. Hatred and injustice have no place at Albion, and will not be tolerated.

We are currently investigating who is responsible for the racist graffiti in our residential buildings and we will seek criminal charges against those involved. If they are Albion College students, they will also immediately be subject to the student conduct process—including the potential for suspension or expulsion.

We cannot become a true community of belonging until everybody feels safe on campus, and it is our responsibility to continuously reaffirm our commitment to anti-racism through both words and actions.
