Today's engineering challenge: Save the Gingerbread Man! 🍪

The Gingerbread Man needed a way across the river that wouldn't sink because if he couldn't make it across, he'd have to take a ride from that sneaky fox. 🦊

We gave the kiddos aluminum foil, sponges, sticks and straws and told them to build something that would float and carry him across.

At first, everyone just kind of stared at us. 😂

“But how do we do it?”

There was no example to copy and no “right” way to build it. It took a little bit for everyone to get comfortable with that, but once they realized they could try whatever idea they had, they were OFF...folding, stacking, connecting, changing their plans and figuring out what might actually float.

Then came the best part: putting each invention in the “river” and finding out if it worked! Some designs surprised us, some needed a little rethinking, and every single test gave us something new to notice.

The Chomp Saw made another appearance today (safe to say it's a hit), and we also designed and tested our own bubble wands. 🫧

A pretty busy day for our inventors!

Inventors Week is off to a pretty great start.

Today we took The Three Little Pigs and turned it into our first engineering challenge: Could we build a house strong enough to survive the Big Bad Wolf?

Working together, our kiddos used Play-Doh and loose building materials to plan, build, problem solve, and make adjustments to their houses. Then came the real test, the Big Bad Wolf came to huff and puff. 🌬️🐺 Lots of giggles when the hair dryer dressed as the wolf came out! 🤣

And every single house survived!

We also brought out the Chomp Saw, giving our inventors a chance to safely explore a real tool while working those hand muscles, coordination, and confidence.

And because inventing doesn't have to stop with building, we made our own bubble wands and put our designs to the test. 🫧

So much of STEAM learning happens in that little space between “I have an idea” and “let's see if it works.” Today was full of both. ❤️

Our big question this week is “What can we discover when we slow down and look closely?” And over the past two days, our Tree Schoolers have done a whole lot of looking, wondering, experimenting, and creating.

On Monday and Tuesday, we used beautiful pressed flowers to create little nature treasure boxes and planted flowers of our own. We fed hungry baby birds, carefully transferred “pollen,” and even discovered what it might feel like to move together as a millipede. 🐛

Then we put nature to the test! Sticks, shells, feathers, rocks and more went into the water as we made predictions: Will it sink or will it float? There were surprises, theories, and lots of excitement as we discovered the answer to each one.

And because no pond is complete without a few frogs…we had those jumping in too. 🐸🤣

Two days of slowing down just enough to notice, ask “What do you think will happen?” and then find out for ourselves.

That’s curiosity at work. 💚

It's hard to teach kids about feelings because it's a fairly abstract concept. It's hard to describe how it feels to be sad, scared, or excited.

It's important to begin teaching kids about their emotions as early as possible since their feelings affect every choice they make. Kids who understand their emotions are less likely to act out by using temper tantrums, aggression, and defiance to express themselves.

A child who can say, “I’m mad at you,” is less likely to hit. A child who can say, "That hurts my feelings," is better equipped to resolve conflict peacefully.
