White Horse Forestry has Wildland Firefighting Training opportunities year round!

Many individuals who serve on wildfire assignments aren’t fulltime firefighters. The people working essential support roles in fire camps — often earn what's known as a red card, so they can assist on fires throughout the year in addition to their normal jobs.

Every role, whether on the line or behind the scenes, is vital to our firefighting system and the protection it provides to impacted communities across the country.

Working on a fire assignment over by Wisdom last week. Montana has seen many fires over the years, we need to do more to reduce the impact of fire on our ranches, communities, and forested timber lands.

Thank you Rep Steve Gist!

Thank you Rep Steve Gist!

Not the normal attire that I normally have on when in this great building (The Capitol) I was just coming off of a fire assignment and stopped by to work on some fire related issues. Legislative work doesn’t stop for fire season.
Have a great day everyone.

A draft of a letter circulated this month in Congress, attributed to Montana Sen. Tim Sheehy, asked Trump to immediately transfer firefighting operations to a newly created federal wildfire agency. ⤵️ Find a link to the story in the comments.

Finally!

Today, U.S. Forest Service has filed a proposed rule to rescind the national 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule in its entirety.

For over 25 years, this rule has restricted road construction and limited the Forest Service's ability to carry out critical active management work within inventoried roadless area.

The rescission intends to prioritize local agency decision-making over regulatory rules that are the same across the country, regardless of specific land management issues and needs.

Evidence-based methods center on fuel reduction. Western US forests show mechanical thinning plus prescribed burning (or pile burning) cuts subsequent wildfire severity 62-72%. Prescribed fire alone achieves similar results. Thinning without surface fuel treatment is far less effective. Benefits fade after ~10 years, so repeat treatments. At landscape scale, strategic placement amplifies effects. Create defensible space (clear 5-30 ft around structures) and harden homes to roughly double survival odds. Most US wildfires are human-caused, so prevention via education and restrictions also reduces starts.
