Albemarle Academy of Dance

Albemarle Academy of Dance Since 1990 we’ve trained dancers in Ballet, Pointe, Tap, Jazz, Modern, Hip Hop, Contemporary, Theatre. & Tumble.

Albemarle Academy of Dance was founded in 1990 by Leigh Johnson Roush as a means of educating local children in the art of dance and related performing arts and to provide enriching opportunities for students in the academy. AAD has become on the most respected centers of dance and performing arts in the Southeast. The staff at Albemarle Academy of Dance consists professional and highly sought aft

er instructors and offers beginning through pre-professional programs. Ballet is the basis of a good dance education and is, therefore, a central focus of our school. However, our goal is to provide students with a well-rounded and broad performing arts education which will allow them many advantages over lesser trained artists. We are proud to offer comprehensive programs in ballet, jazz, tap, modern, contemporary, hip hop, musical theatre, voice, acting and tumbling. At AAD, we require of each student the very best effort of which they are capable and, in return, give the care and attention the student deserves. Alumni of the AAD program have been accepted to and gone on the study at the North Carolina School of the Arts, New York University, Virginia Commonwealth, East Carolina University, Duke University-American Dance Festival, The School of American Ballet, The Limon School, Joffrey Ballet, The Carolina Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, The Rock School and many others. Former and current students have performed on and off Broadway, in film and commercials, with professional companies and on cruise ships. Other alumni have used the skills and appreciation of the arts that they learned in dance classes to thrive in other careers such as teachers, arts program directors and professionals. Our approach to children’s dance education develops skills that can serve the child well throughout the lifetime. These include discipline, self-respect and self-confidence, improved learning skills, creativity, self-expression, imagination and an instilled appreciation for music, dance and other art forms. AAD is home to:
“City Youth Ballet” – youth ballet performance and outreach company
“Playtime Children’s Theatre” – youth acting and performance outreach company
“The Showoffs” – national award-winning competition dance company

We wrapped up our final week of camp with lots of dancing, plenty of hard work, new friendships, and a very well-earned ice cream treat.

We loved watching these dancers learn, grow, laugh, and encourage one another all summer long. Now we’re getting ready for one of our favorite times of the year…

Fall classes begin September 14th.

New classes. New goals. New memories. And another year of growing together.

Make sure you’re part of it. Come be part of the AAD family this fall!

For two weeks, these dancers spent their days at the UNCSA Young Dancers Intensive before heading to AAD for their regular evening summer classes.
No shortcuts.
No days off. Just a commitment to getting better.
We're proud of the discipline, determination, and love of dance they demonstrated all summer.
Experiences like these don't just create better dancers. They build the habits that help dancers reach their goals.

Summer Registration closes Monday, July 7. Six week summer session begins July 13.

Notice what's missing from this video?

Ballet.

We're proud to be known for our ballet training. But one of the best ways to become a stronger dancer is to train in more than just ballet.

That's why our Summer Session is built around sampler classes. Dancers get to experience a variety of styles, develop new skills, and maybe even discover a new favorite before the regular season begins.

Here’s how our recital began…

A theater class and a reminder that every performance begins long before the curtain rises.

Dance is not a seasonal sport. These are dance facts of life!

Dancers who take an entire summer off should plan to begin the fall having lost a significant amount of the strength, stamina, flexibility, placement, and skills they worked so hard to build during the year. For many dancers, that loss can be 50% or more.

The good news? Dancers do not have to spend their entire summer in the studio to maintain what they have achieved.

A few classes each week can help dancers hold on to the progress they made during the year, making the transition back to fall classes much smoother. Consistent summer training also helps prevent frustration and allows dancers to continue building confidence and skills rather than spending weeks trying to regain lost ground.

If dancers want to improve, summer is where it happens. Summer training often creates the biggest leaps in technique, confidence, artistry, and maturity. The dancers who return in the fall strong, confident, and ready for the next level are almost always the dancers who stayed consistent over the summer.

Every dancer's goals are different. But whatever those goals may be, summer choices matter.

Our six week summer session, and summer workshops are designed to help dancers maintain their progress, build new skills, and return to fall classes ready for their best year yet.

Registration closes July 7, Classes begin July 13. Don't spend September trying to get back what you worked all year to achieve.
