Wondering what happens after both sides reach an agreement in mediation? Here is how it works.

Step 1: The terms are written down. Everything discussed and agreed upon during the session is documented in full before anyone leaves the room.

Step 2: Both parties sign the agreement. The family and an authorized representative from the school district both sign the written document, making it official.

Step 3: The agreement is legally binding. Once signed, the mediation agreement is enforceable under the law. Both parties are required to honor what was agreed upon.

Step 4: The IEP is revised if needed. If the agreement calls for changes to the student's IEP, the IEP is amended based upon the mediated agreement.

The families and school districts that reach out early almost always have a better experience with mediation than those who wait until a dispute has escalated. Early action means better communication, more flexibility, and a greater chance of reaching an agreement that puts the student first.
