How do our personal stories and cultural heritage shape our identity and sense of belonging?

Inspired by Yes! We Are Latinos, this lesson invites students to explore the richness and diversity of the Latino experience in the United States through poetry and prose. Students will encounter stories of identity, heritage, struggle, and pride while considering the many different experiences and perspectives within the Latino community.

As they reflect on the voices in the text, students will also have an opportunity to explore their own identities and experiences through personal identity poems or artistic responses.

✨ This Hispanic Heritage Month, help students move beyond learning about culture and create space to listen to the stories, voices, and experiences that help shape who we are.

National Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated September 15–October 15, is an opportunity to honor the rich history, contributions, and achievements of Hispanic American communities.

Our Hispanic Heritage Month lesson plan invites students to go beyond celebration. Students will explore:

🌎 The diverse identities, histories, and experiences within these communities

Our elementary lesson, “World Cup Soccer: Players, Countries and Cultures,” uses the excitement of the World Cup to help students in grades 3–5 learn about countries, cultures, diversity, and the stories of players from around the world.

Students will explore the history of the World Cup, learn about players and the countries they represent, and create their own World Cup album featuring player profiles, team badges, World Cup history, and more.

A fun way to bring global learning into the classroom while helping students discover what we can learn from the people and cultures represented on the world’s biggest sporting stage! 🌍

Twenty-five years later, we still remember.

We remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, the families forever changed, and the profound tragedy that touched our nation and our world.

But as we remember, we can also remember something else: the extraordinary ways people showed up for one another.

First responders ran toward danger. Strangers helped strangers. Communities came together. People donated blood, opened their homes, brought food, offered comfort, and found countless ways to help—during that day and in the days, weeks, and months that followed.

In the face of unimaginable tragedy, we saw courage, compassion, generosity, and humanity.

Twenty-five years later, perhaps one way we can honor those we lost is by carrying that spirit forward.

What is one thing you can do today to help someone else?

It doesn't have to be extraordinary. Check in on someone. Offer a helping hand. Listen. Include someone who may feel left out. Stand up for someone who needs an ally.

Small acts of kindness can matter more than we know.

Today, we remember.
We honor.
And we choose to show up for one another.

Help students connect the history of voting rights to the issues shaping our democracy today.

After exploring our lesson, "Who Gets to Vote? The History and Erosion of Voting Rights," continue the conversation with our companion lesson “Congressional Maps, Redistricting and Gerrymandering: What Does it All Mean?”

This lesson helps students understand how congressional districts are redrawn following the census, the difference between redistricting and gerrymandering, and how district boundaries can influence representation and elections.
