Kiwanis Club of Albany-Dougherty County

Last week's program was presented by Scott Steiner, President and Chief Executive Officer of Phoebe Health Systems. Scott has been in that position for seven and one half years. He previously lived in Detroit, Chicago and St. Louis where more of his family lives. He said he and his wife really like the south and Albany because the people are so nice. Phoebe is working on being a certified trauma center and when they do, they will be a Tier 2 trauma center in Georgia. He said that certified trauma centers receive funding from the Sate of Georgia through the Super Speeder’s Fund for those drivers who get caught going 20 MPH over the speed limit. He then outlined some of the hospital’s requirements to be a Tier 2 Trauma Center. Scott encouraged everyone to purchase a torniquet for their vehicle and home. He gave examples of those whose lives were saved because they had a torniquet. One of the objectives of the trauma center is to educate people on ways to save a life. He said car accidents are 60% of all trauma cases. Scott said he has 200 job opportunities for nurses and 51 opportunities for doctors. Currently Phoebe is paying higher wages than Atlanta hospitals. Scott is thankful that Phoebe now has an excellent cardiologist/electro physicist in Dr. James Coman. Scott is also thankful that all of Phoebe’s operations are in a strong financial position. Today, our Kiwanis club was excited to donate 35 backpacks to Family Literacy Connection, 25 to Dougherty County CASA Foster program, 10 to Liberty House of Albany

All 70 backpacks were stocked with 35 essential school supplies and a water bottle. Thanking Georgia Kiwanis for the grant program that helped make this project happen!

PROGRAM THIS WEEK:
Michelle Willaims introduced Dwana Trimble with Albany Technical College Albany Technical College Adult Education Department Learning Program, and Kristin Baer from the Career Service Program of ATC. The Adult Learning Program is for individuals who have not achieved their high school diploma, and they help them get their GED diploma. During the time they are working on their GED they give them training in various trade skills to help them get a job. One of the challenges the students face is that ATC cannot pay for the tests the students are required to pass, such as the GED. Kristin Baer coordinates helping students get a job prior to and after graduation. Many of the students don’t have transportation nor food while at ATC. They use donations to try to provide these necessities. Thanks to Michelle Williams for arranging our program.
