On this day in 1873, Susan Blow started the nation's first public kindergarten in a suburb of St. Louis. Blow was inspired by the "learning through play" philosophy of German idealist Friedrich Fröbel. Remember playing games or singing songs to learn stuff in kindergarten? That's because of Susan Blow. Alphabet Countdown continues! P is for "public institution." That's what LBCC is, but what does it mean? Officially, it means we primarily get funding from the government. On the daily though, it means we're YOUR college. Whether you're John Q. Public or Jane Public or Jellybean Public or even have a different last name than "Public," we're here to serve you and we exist because of you. It's an honor and a responsibility we take very seriously.

So yeah, Linn-Benton Community College is our name, public service is our game. Anyone, at any stage of life, can find a chance at a better life here. That's the power of education, baby.

Welcome Day is just under one month away! Only a few more letters in this Alphabet Countdown to get through as we get ever closer to Sept. 23, the unofficial kick-off to Fall term.

Alphabet Countdown continues! O is for "online class." The internet - some say it's the wave of the future. In the present, we spend sooo muuuch tiiime on it. Like right now. Makes it the perfect place for education! LBCC offers more classes in an online delivery mode each term, giving you the freedom to stay at home or be on the go, and still work towards your degree. Online is great if you have work or family obligations, or just prefer working at your own pace a little more. Or just don't like being around people. (No judgment, we get it sometimes.)

If fully online isn't your thing, then look for other course mode options like hybrid (a mix of online and in-person), virtual (online, but synchronous), or the classic face-to-face at one of our three campuses.

Can you rub your belly and pat your head at the same time? How about juggle bowling pins and tightrope walk simultaneously? Or even more bonkers - dual enroll your college experience? Whaaat?!

It's actually quite a bit easier than the juggling thing, or even the pat your head bit. You can dual enroll in a couple different ways: between LBCC and Oregon State (Degree Partnership, where you get an OSU degree but pay half as much for the LB classes you take), or LBCC and your high school (College Now, where you take college-level classes for free, from the comfort of your own high school).

Happy birthday to Nobel Prize-winning theoretical physicist Erwin Schrodinger (1887-1961), a major player in quantum theory with contributions to several fields in physics (wave mechanics, color theory, etc.), who also coined the term "quantum entanglement." If you're majoring in Physics, you're gonna come across this guy.

But mostly we know him from the cat thing. You know how it goes - if Schrodinger is in a box, he is both wearing his tabby cat fursuit and also not wearing it. Or something like that.

On this day in 3114 BC, the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar starts. Remember how the world was supposed to end on December 21, 2012, because of an ancient Mayan calendar? That was certainly an interpretation of the Long Count. Probably the wrong interpretation, because that date only marked the end of a big cycle of time - sort of like going from one millennia to the next, like Y2K - but said nothing about the world ending. Like it was supposed to on Y2K. Or Aug. 23, 2013, as Rasputin predicted. Or Sept. 24, 2025, as TikTok predicted.

Moral of the story? Be wary of doomsday predictions. Except of course June 5, 2047, when the asteroid Momus-X will smite the Earth and all shall perish. Get your degrees and certificates before then, or else!

Alphabet Countdown continues! L is for "Learning Center." Something you can learn in LBCC's Learning Center, if you didn't already know, is that using the Learning Center leads to better comprehension, better grades, and better confidence in all your classes. Want to succeed in college? Get yourself to the Learning Center.

Open during the summer, Mon-Thurs 8am-7pm, the Learning Center offers writing and math support, academic coaching, tutoring in specific subject areas, and more. Want one-on-one help? Just a quiet place to study? Again, get yourself to the Learning Center.

We're halfway through the Alphabet Countdown, only 6 weeks or so from Welcome Day, and experts agree this is the perfect time to make plans this fall to get tutoring support early and often. Where are these "experts," you ask? You know where - get yourself to the Learning Center!

On this day in 1782, George Washington created the Badge of Military Merit, now known as the Purple Heart. In fact, today is National Purple Heart Day. Just as with Veterans Day, we don't need to wait for a holiday to recognize the service and sacrifice of those who joined our armed forces. LBCC offers resources and support to veterans on campus through work study opportunities, scholarships, the Veterans Club and Veterans Resource Center.
