The Antechinus is a small Australian marsupial with a bizarre reproductive strategy. During its short breeding season, males mate repeatedly and for long periods. Their bodies produce extremely high levels of stress hormones, which can suppress their immune systems and cause severe physical deterioration.

By the end of the breeding season, most males die, often before they ever get another chance to reproduce.
