Continuing our tribute to the "Six Triple Eight", we are honoring the incredible Millie Dunn Veasey (Jan 31, 1918- March 9, 2018). 🎖️✨

A dedicated civil rights activist and veteran, Millie Dunn Veasey served as a Staff Sergeant in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) during World War II.
She was truly an essential member of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only All-Black, All-Women's unit sent overseas during the war. After her service, she became the first female president of the Raleigh, North Carolina, chapter of the NAACP.

In the face of both racial and gender discrimination, Sergeant Veasey helped manage the staggering backlog of millions of letters for nearly seven million soldiers in Europe. By ensuring the mail was delivered, she provided the essential connection to home that kept troop morale alive. Upon returning home, she continued her fight for equality on the front lines of the Civil Rights Movement, even marching with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. A lifelong leader and activist, she was a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

“I thought to myself that if those White women can do it, so can I, and besides that, my country needs me.” ~Millie Dunn Veasey~

Major Charity Adams Earley was a trailblazing military officer and educator. She made history as the first African American woman to be commissioned as an officer in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) and rose to become the highest-ranking Black woman in the military by the end of WWII.

She is most renowned for commanding the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the "Six Triple Eight." This was the only All-Black, All-Women's battalion to serve overseas during the war. Major Adams led her unit to do the impossible. Under the motto "No mail, low morale," they cleared a massive backlog of 17 million letters in just three months, half the time they were allotted. Beyond logistics, she was a fierce advocate for civil rights, famously refusing to accept segregated facilities for her troops.

A woman of excellence in every field, Major Charity Adams Earley was also a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

"Don't look back when you have made a decision. You cannot change the past, and looking back only impedes forward movement." ~Major Charity Adams Earley~

Today, we honor her legacy of Leadership, Advocacy, and "Firsts."🙌

We salute Brigadier General Hazel Johnson Brown, a nurse and educator who broke down one of the biggest barriers in the military.

Hazel J. Brown was the first Black woman to achieve the rank of General in the U.S. Army and the first Black Chief of the Army Nurse Corps. After being told she’d never get into nursing school because of her race, she didn't just join the field; she mastered it. She oversaw 7,000 nurses across eight countries and transformed military medicine through her commitment to education and clinical excellence.

"I hope the criterion for selection did not include race but competence." ~BG Hazel Johnson Brown~

Today, we honor her legacy of Resilience, Grace, and "Firsts."✨

We honor a modern-day pioneer, Lieutenant General Nadja Y. West. (March 20, 1961)🎖️🩺

A retired three-star general and physician, Lt. Gen. Nadja Y. West served as the 44th Surgeon General of the United States Army. She is the first Black woman to hold the rank of Lieutenant General in the U.S. Army, as well as the first Black Surgeon General of the Army. At the time of her promotion, she was the highest-ranking woman to have graduated from West Point.

Beyond breaking major barriers in the modern day, Lt. Gen. West managed the entire Army’s healthcare system, overseeing the medical care of over a million soldiers and their families.
