A great college application essay uses examples to prove to the admissions readers what you have done or what you can do.

Instead of writing "I'm a hard worker," expand on a specific example of your work ethic.

Instead of writing "I value diversity and inclusion," provide an example of something you did that demonstrates this value.

You get it. But, when we get caught up in our own writing, it's hard to see where examples are needed.

Writing an essay is like tying a shoe.

The first draft, you feed the laces through, one by one, from bottom to top. It's time consuming. But, if you get up to walk around, you'll trip, or they'll fall off.

Another draft, you tighten the laces, from bottom to top. Not easy to get everything cinched up. And still, if you walk around they loosen up. If you run, you'll fall.

In your final draft, you tie the laces tight on top, with a nice bow. Now, the shoes stay snug, and they do what they're made to do. Now, you can run!

It's easy to put off our college application essay until the last minute. There are so many other things to do, and we often want to know what we're going to write about before we start.

Instead, start early, even if you don't know what you'll write about. Figure it out through writing, not thinking.

And write often. Even ten or twenty minutes a day will make a difference.

Combine these practices to build momentum and avoid the stress of procrastination.

Whether you're telling a story, reflecting on an experience, or describing your skills, your ideas aren't smart unless they're clear to your readers.

For a college app essay, no matter your prompt, revise for clarity. This means:

- use mostly nouns and verbs
- simplify transition words/phrases
- avoid redundancy in words and ideas
- simplify your punctuation when possible
- your sentences sound logical when read aloud
