What Are the Benefits of Eating Oatmeal Every Morning?

Did you know eating oatmeal has many benefits? If not, continue reading. Oatmeal is a whole grain and eating whole grains can decrease your risk for several illnesses such as high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. Whole grains are a great sources of iron, magnesium, and vitamin B. In addition, oatmeal contains lignans which is a plant chemical that has been linked to prevention of heart disease. We are talking about the old fashion oatmeal not the one which is already in a package and flavored. These may be high in sodium and sugar and lower in the fiber we all need. Oatmeal is a great source of fiber which means that when you have oats for breakfast, you are going to feel full for a while. If you don't like plain oats, add fruit, nuts, cinnamon or nutmeg to it to improve the flavor or make a smoothie.
What else can oatmeal do for you?It may lower your cholesterol, especially your LDL which is the "bad" cholesterol. MayoClinic. com lists oatmeal as one of the top five foods to eat to improve your cholesterol levels.

» 100 Benefits of Meditation

Health tips are back. Are you excited?
There are many advantages of meditation. These include but are not limited to: help reduce stress which we experience quite frequently in the nursing school , lowers oxygen consumption, decreases respiratory rate, increases blood flow and slows down the heart rate, relaxes our nervous system, influences our mood and behavior, helps control our own thoughts, decreases our tendency to worry, helps us achieve happiness and peace of mind, as well as it changes our attitude toward life. And the most important thing is that it is FREE and you can do it almost anywhere. Establish a time for your meditation. Put a sign on your door that says: “Meditation. Please, do not disturb.”

Hello ASU students!

I hope everyone passed their finals and is ready for having a little break.

Here are 10 easy tips to live a healthier life:

1.Move it to lose it: turn off the computer and your smart phone, call your friends and go out and have fun. Move for 30-60 minutes instead of playing video games. Enjoy the sunshine.
2.Avoid the crash: skipping meals throughout the day contributes to your energy decline, overeating, which will lead to weight gain. I know you may be busy but make sure you find time to eat regular meals and healthy snacks.
3.Fuel up with healthy food: next time you have a snack; try to have healthy ones such as fruit, veggies, nuts, string cheese, low-fat yogurt, pretzels, and low-fat popcorn.
4.Drink smarter: soda, juice, milk shakes, sports drinks, smoothies, and coffee tend to be high in sugar and calories. Grab a glass of water, unsweetened tea, fat-free/ low-fat milk, or zero-calorie flavored mineral water instead.
5.Focus on food: eat at the table with your family or friends NOT with your computer or smartphone. You will eat slower and more aware of how much you are actually eating.
6.Eat only when you are hungry: when you feel down, don't go for the chocolate. Instead, go and grab your tennis shoes and take a walk. Call your friend/family, listen to music, or write in your journal.
7.Unplug and catch some Z's: if you don't rest enough, the hormones that regulate hunger levels can get out of whack. Limit screen time before bedtime. Screen time can "trick" your brain into thinking it's daytime and keep you from falling asleep which can lead to "Let's eat.".
8.Get your family on board: educate people around you about healthy snack, healthy choices, and the importance of exercise.
9.Lead, don't follow: be a positive influence for people around you. If someone says, let's go to have a burger; suggest restaurants that offer healthier foods. Better, invite friends over to make dinner together.
10.Be true to yourself: "perfect body" comes in different sizes. You don't have to be size 2 to be healthy.

Healthy Ways to Cope with Stress
Take care of yourself.
Eat healthy, well-balanced meals
Exercise on a regular basis
Get plenty of sleep
Give yourself a break if you feel stressed out
Talk to others. Share your problems and how you are feeling and coping with a parent, friend, counselor, doctor, or pastor.
Avoid drugs and alcohol. Drugs and alcohol may seem to help with the stress. In the long run, they create additional problems and increase the stress you are already feeling.
Take a break. If your stress is caused by a national or local event, take breaks from listening to the news stories, which can increase your stress.
Recognize when you need more help. If problems continue or you are thinking about suicide, talk to a psychologist, social worker, or professional counselor. -CDC.gov

[02/21/14]   Hey Grizzlies! We have two spots left open for the blood drive on Monday. They are at 1:20 and 3:20. Please comment if you are interested in donating and we will get ahold of you!

[02/17/14]   Happy Monday!
Salt therapy is a great way to help with colds. Using a salt inhaler for 15 minutes a day can clear up a stuffy nose and keep those allergies at bay. For relief from a couch, mix a teaspoon of honey with a dash of turmeric. It’ll help soothe a sore throat and kill bacteria. Everyone, stay healthy and happy. Spring is almost here.

[02/12/14]   Hey everyone! Don't forget we have an ASSNA meeting tomorrow at 12:00 in Richardson N214. We're looking forward to seeing some new faces!

[02/10/14]   Hello Grizzlies,

Are you having the winter blues? Try these tips to feel better. Peppermint oil can help you with sadness and depression. Florescent compact bulbs can actually change the levels of melatonin in your brain, inhibiting depression. Melatonin can also regulate sleep and wake cycle. Chili peppers which contain capsaicin will boost your energy and enhance circulation. Ginger tea will boost your metabolism and can also help with weight loss. Last but not least, gingko biloba will make you more alert and boost your brain power. So get ready for the tests with these small but powerful advices. Have a great week everyone.
