In preparation for the return of students each year, our new staff (and some veteran staff), put on eye-covers and attempt every day activities as part of their Blindness Awareness Training. These activities are designed to create understanding, rather than mimic or minimize the real experiences of individuals with vision loss. Simulating visual impairment does not replicate lived experience, since individuals without visual impairments have the advantage of relying on their prior visual memory and experiences.
(Photo Collage Description: Top left: a woman wearing eye-cover is seen in profile, holding a paper plate and using her left hand to feel along the edge of a kitchen counter top. Top center: a woman wearing eye cover holds a cellophane package containing deli meat to be added to the two slices of bread on the table in front of her. Another adult woman without eye-cover, stands to her left, observing. Top right: a smiling woman observes another adult woman, who is wearing eye cover, uses tongs to put salad on her plate. Bottom: a group of adults, some with eye cover and some without, gather around a table to try and assemble sandwiches. Text toward the top reads, "Blindness Awareness Training". The NMSBVI logo is at bottom right.

✨NMSBVI would like to wish a big CONGRATULATIONS and a fond farewell to Sylvia Hartley, Business and Finance Manager! Sylvia has served NMSBVI for 16 years. She began as our Accounting Specialist, then moved into her B&F role in 2014. When asked if she'll be setting her alarm clock on Monday morning, she said, "Yes! I don't want to waste the morning! I'm a morning person. 🌞) Sylvia says she is looking forward to catching up on projects around the house, finishing a class that she is auditing with her husband, and continuing to learn to play the piano! 🎶 All of us here at NMSBVI wish Sylvia the best! Enjoy your new adventures! 💙💛💙

🐾Meet "River"! NMSBVI's favorite, four-legged fur friend! As an assistant to our Adapted P.E. teacher, River has also provided motivation, comfort, and companionship to our students for many years. River is almost 13 years old and she is currently recovering from surgery. These days, she is enjoying a well-earned retirement...so she's not on campus as much as she used to be. But her presence is missed by students and staff alike. So today we wish a Happy National Dog Day to NMSBVI's very own RIVER! 💙💛💙🐾
(Photo Collage Description: At left: An adult man, accompanied by a large, black dog, escorts a student on a trike around the track. Center: A large, fluffy black dog with a white chest and muzzle, poses for a portrait. At right: An adult man instructs a student to throw a sand-bag toward a co****le board in the gymnasium, while a large, fluffy dog looks on. The photos are overlaid on clip art of paw prints. Text across the top reads, "Happy National Dog Day!" The NMSBVI logo is at bottom left.)
