Crockett Gridders Crush Another Hapless Foe; Lexington to Be First True Test

Now that the Crockett County football Cavaliers have devoured the two cupcakes that were on the table, it’s time to see how they’ll digest actual meat.
This coming Friday night, the Cavs will take the field against their first Region foe of the season, a team that – like Crockett – is 2-0. Lexington will journey to Alamo having edged Riverside 14-8 for its second win after demolishing Bolivar Central in its opener.
It’s hard to gauge exactly how prepared the Cavs can be, after facing two opponents so hapless that Crockett has yet to punt a single time. The latest victim was Ripley, which fell 62-0 to the hosts after putting up as little resistance as Nashville Collegiate Prep (a 68-0 loser) did in the first rout.
“It’ll be different this week,” Coach Kevin Ward acknowledged as he left the field Friday night after watching his troops completely dominate the visitors. Crockett led 28-0 by the end of the first quarter and 55-0 by the half, and only a running clock during the final two periods kept the scoreboard from blowing a fuse.
Outside of being penalized seven times for 70 yards – and this by a crew that called four fumbled laterals by Ripley “incomplete forward passes” – Ward’s Cavs didn’t do much wrong. The defense held the Tigers to 65 total yards on 33 plays, returned an interception for a touchdown, blocked a punt, and recovered a fumble that the officials deemed legitimate. Offensively, Crockett scored every single time it had the ball until a fourth-quarter pass interception. But the Cavs quickly got the ball back without difficulty and scored again to put a bow on the night’s fireworks.
And just because Crockett’s opponents thus far will only be able to see this year’s playoffs from the bleachers, doesn’t mean the home team lacks weapons. Senior running back DK Woods ran 14 times for 170 yards and four touchdowns; senior quarterback Ben Burgess threw two more scoring passes and now has seen five of his seven completions on the season go the distance; receivers Kris Phillips and Titus Luten each caught a touchdown for the second straight week; and Sq**rt Pickens picked off a Ripley pass and scooted 27 yards to the house for another tally.
Chris Mann also ran for a touchdown and sophomore Davis Porter caught a scoring pass from freshman quarterback Roman Barker.
Porter also recovered a fumble, Mann and Brody Parlow joined Pickens with interceptions, and sophomore Rylan Redding blocked a punt midway through the second period to set up Luten’s score. Phillips, who also for Noah Mayfield’s extra-point kicks when he’s not at wide receiver, also threw a two-point conversion pass to Dontavious Forrest.
Friday’s duel with Lexington will feature a fireworks show at halftime and a “Red, White, and Blue” theme as CCHS celebrates our nation’s 250th birthday.

Late-Round Clay Kail Birdies Swing Golf Match in Crockett’s Favor by a Single Stroke

In a high school golf match, each boys team designates five players as their starters. The top four scores among each team’s five are the ones that are counted as the final results for the contest.
The players generally tee off in th*****mes – three players to a hole, usually two from one team and one from the other, alternating at each hole. Since the players tee off at different holes, they tend to finish at different times, and therefore nobody ever really knows how the team stands until the last players to finish turn in their scorecards. So it’s difficult to assess the pressure any individual player feels, because he doesn’t really know how anybody else on his team has performed.
But when your team ends up winning a match by a single stroke – as Crockett County did against Madison Academic on Thursday at the Alamo Golf & Country Club – it’s hard not to direct most of the credit toward the guy who birdied his final two holes.
On this day, that would be the Cavaliers’ Clay Kail. While his final score of 41 wasn’t Crockett’s best – that belonged to senior stalwart Jack Shaver, who carded a 38 to tie for the round’s medalist honors – it’s noteworthy that if Kail hadn’t finished as strongly as he did, his team’s one-shot victory could have just as easily been a one-shot defeat.
As it turned out, Coach Pate Randall’s crew squeaked past the visiting Mustangs 163-164. Supporting Shaver’s 38 and Kail’s 41 were Max Woods (41), George Randall (43), and Myles Perkins (45).
Madison’s Trey Perkins matched Shaver’s 38 to tie for medalist honors. Trice Mullens carded a 39 for the Mustangs.
“That was too close for comfort,” Coach Randall said afterward. “We didn’t have our best, but a win is a win. On a positive note, Madison was a very gracious team and were thankful that I let them bring every JV player they had. A couple of them never have had the chance to ever play in a match, so we were literally helping grow the game of golf today. That’s what it’s all about.”
As tight as the boys match was, the two schools’ girls did them one better: they tied, 97-97! (In girls golf, the top two scores are added.) Madison’s Nora Manley was low scorer with a 43, but Crockett’s Rachel Crossnoe was close behind at 46 and Emmalynn Medlin contributed her best score to date (51) to forge the deadlock.
On Monday, Crockett’s teams will be at The Farms in Dyersburg, competing all day in the West Tennessee Invitational. Each member will play 18 holes rather than nine in the event.
HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL: If you’ve ever witnessed a 25-23 result in a volleyball set, you know each point was likely a hard-fought conquest, and the players’ nerves were on edge throughout.
Now – imagine three of them in a row. That’s what Crockett County pulled off at Milan Thursday evening, edging the Lady Dawgs in another classic battle 25-23, 25-23, and 25-23. If ever was a sweep was NOT lopsided, this was it.
The two schools have been engaged in a few five-set thrillers in recent seasons, and this one easily could have gone that way as well. But Coach Andrew Laman’s Lady Cavaliers – now 9-4 on the season – received notable solid play from Madi Collins, Wesley Thornton, Lakyn Forsythe, Addie Davidson, and Carmen Claybrooks in managing the razor-then victory. Milan had previous wins over Huntingdon, Dyersburg, and Camden Central.
Crockett will travel to Gibson County on Monday and Dyersburg on Tuesday for its next two matches.
MIDDLE SCHOOL SOCCER: With barely a minute left in the match, Crockett’s Kalynn Lewis took an assist pass from Preslee Bray and hammered in the tying goal as the Lady Cavs salvaged a 2-2 deadlock with Hardin County.
Bray also fed Lewis for the game’s first goal at 27:45 of the opening half for a lead that held all the way to the intermission, thanks in large measure to goalkeeper Kaylee Servin’s five saves. Forwards Lewis and Paris Robinson dominated play most of the period, but the one goal was all that showed for it.
Hardin County broke through for a pair of goals in the second half at 18:37 and 4:17, with the second looking like it might be the game-winner. But Bray and Lewis teamed up for the equalizer at the 1:07 mark as Crockett displayed notable improvement over its earlier performances.
MIDDLE SCHOOL SOFTBALL: Henderson County scored in all four innings in which it batted – including a five-spot in the third – on its way to defeating CCMS 10-4 Thursday in Lexington.
The Lady Tigers took advantage of four Crockett errors to tally six unearned runs, amounting to the difference in the ballgame. Catcher Mahaley Hicks went 2-for-2 with a run batted in to pace the Lady Cav offense. Brenley Hazlewood knocked in a run with a double, and Abbey McAnulty also plated a run. Crockett is now 5-3 on the season.

Cross-Country Girls Claim First-Ever Race Win over Obion County

Tuesday offered us a distinctive glimpse into what makes Crockett County athletics so special.
Victories by three different sports were dependent on the one thing that coaches in a small population must realize is a necessity: the sharing of athletes.
As in many rural schools, there are a number of Cavalier students who play multiple sports. Performance experts will tell you that’s a very positive thing. Athletes benefit from the variety of opportunities that playing more than a single sport affords them.
As far as scheduling goes, sharing athletes isn’t usually a problem unless specific sport seasons overlap or run concurrently. The biggest conflict at Crockett is the simultaneous fall season of girls soccer and cross-country. There are a number of Lady Cavaliers who try to do both, and cross-country coach Julie Nass has been very gracious in the past in agreeing to a “soccer-has-priority” arrangement.
Crockett was originally scheduled to have a soccer match at Jackson North Side Tuesday. But North Side apparently had also scheduled a contest with Trenton Peabody for the same date and time. As to where the miscommunication blame should be attributed, no one on the Lady Cavalier was certain, but the ultimate result was that Crockett’s soccer team would NOT have a match Tuesday.
But soccer’s disappointment was cross-country’s gain. Nass’s runners were scheduled for a race in Union City, and she was prepared to head into it without a handful of her top performers – who all happen to play soccer as well. Suddenly, they were now available.
So she loaded up the van, took them to Union City, and the Lady Cavaliers made Crockett cross-country history by defeating West Tennessee perennial powerhouse Obion County Central for the first time in school history. Crockett placed first in the girls division at the Union City Invitational 5K by having three of the Top 15 as medalists and three more who barely missed – and all six are members of Coach Alex Taylor’s soccer squad.
“We were lucky the soccer game got canceled,” Nass laughed after the race. “Seriously, though, seeing our depth this year and how hard these girls are working, I was going to set the goal that they don’t just go for State this year but to go as Sectional champs – in other words, beat Obion – because we’ve always gone as runners up to that juggernaut. Obion has won every regular season meet and region championship for at least 20 years.
“Well, I did not expect us to do it in our season opener! That being said, it is still the goal. And I know Obion’s coach and team are going to work even harder now to beat us. So we are celebrating tonight for sure, but we’re not goping to get complacent. Section champs plus State is the goal.”
Crockett junior Alivia Hale led the Lady Cavs’ tightly-bunched parade, finishing eighth in a time of 23:15.42. Senior Avery Thornton was thirteenth (25:01.36), sophomore Ruth Gourley was fifteenth (25:15.77), sophomore Caroline Scruggs was seventeenth, freshman Olivia Barger was nineteenth, and sophomore Marley Thornton was twentieth as Nass’s crew ran into the school history books. Obion senior stalwart Klicey Campbell, who finished fifth, was the lone Lady Rebel racer to get in ahead of Hale.
On the boys side, freshman Jose Aguirre earned a medal for Crockett by placing fourteenth in a time of 18:47.22, leading the Cavaliers to a sixth-place team finish.
“Almost my whole boys team is also playing travel soccer right now,” Nass said, “and we had some veterans overcoming soccer injuries. So I told the vets if they weren’t 100% today to just help pace the freshmen. I don’t know if it helped or if it was just all heart but those freshmen boys all did fantastic, especially Jose medaling in his high school opener and Nathan Bailey (38th) almost breaking 21 minutes. So I’ll take sixth seeing how close we were to fourth.
“The goal will be to get this young boys team qualified to State as well, which would end a 10-year drought. The boys team last made it in 2016 when assistant coach Walker Williams was a junior on that squad.”

HIGH SCHOOL GOLF: Coach Pate Randall is another Crockett County team leader who is grateful for multiple-sport athletes. And to celebrate his birthday Tuesday, several of them shot their best rounds ever to present him a victory over Jackson South Side at the Alamo Golf & Country Club.
The boys defeated the Hawks 153-189, shooting “the best team score we’ve had in the three years I’ve been involved in helping coach them.” Medalist Jack Shaver (who is also the manager for Crockett’s basketball squad) shot a season-best 35, one under par for the nine holes. Baseball players George Randall and Myles Perkins each contributed scores of 39, and Clay Kail added a 40. For Perkins and Kail, the scores were career-bests. Max Woods – who is also on the basketball team – had a solid 41.
South Side did not bring a girls team to the match, so Crockett’s th*****me of Rachel Crossnoe, Alyssa Stricklin, and Emmalynn Medlin played a round together – and while Crossnoe delivered her dependable score of 40, Stricklin (51) and Medlin (52) posted their best scores ever on the course.
“We got continued great play from Jack today,” Randall said. “And Myles continues to get better and better. A 153 for nine holes would be a 306 for 18 – that score would give us a chance to win the region.”
HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL: Anyone who thought that Crockett’s girls might be hanging their heads after battling so hard Monday night in a grueling match with Jackson Christian School only to lose in four tight sets doesn’t know the competitive spirit and resilience of Coach Andrew Laman’s club.
Those traits were on display in Alamo Tuesday when the Lady Cavaliers swept a lopsided varsity doubleheader from visiting Westview, downing the Lady Chargers 25-14, 25-18, and 25-20 in the opening match and then doing even worse damage in the second, winning 25-10, 25-11, and 25-10.
Laman’s volleyballers – who also comprise portions of Crockett’s softball, basketball, and tennis teams, to keep the Tuesday “theme” going – improved their record to 8-4 as they journey to Milan Thursday to face the always scrappy Lady Dawgs.

Lady Cavalier Volleyballers Fall in Post-Season Atmosphere Match

If you’re going to be watching volleyball in late August – which, obviously, is still very early in the season for high schoolers – you might as well see two teams which each made the TSSAA State Tournament a year ago in their respective divisions.
Monday night in Alamo, Crockett County hosted Jackson Christian School, and there was definitely a post-season atmosphere and post-season quality of play.
Throughout the vast majority of the contest, the teams were only separated by a point or two on the scoreboard at any given time. The lead was constantly switching hands. Great plays were the norm rather than the exception.
When it was over, the Lady Eagles had escaped with a 3-1 triumph, but not without major resistance from Coach Andrew Laman’s Lady Cavaliers.
Both teams entered Monday’s duel having competed in extremely tough weekend tournaments in the Memphis area. Crockett managed three wins at the White Station Spartan Showdown, while JCS gained a victory over Desoto Central of Southaven in the Volley in the ‘Ville event in Collierville.
The Lady Eagles broke open a 15-12 first set with a late rally for a 25-15 win, but Set #2 quickly became an all-out war between the combatants. The score was tied at 17-17, 19-19, and 23-23 until Crockett’s Wesley Thornton hammered a successful kill to put the hosts up 24-23. But JCS rallied again to make it 25-25 and then 26-26 before the Lady Cavs finally broke through for the two straight points that produced a 28-26 triumph.
With the sets now even at 1-1, the third game began to mimic Set #2 early. It was 11-11, then 14-14, then 16-16, and 19-19. Riding the bullet serves of junior Addison Kelley, the visitors tallied the final four points to claim a 25-21 win and put themselves on the brink of a match victory.
Laman’s club – getting solid play from veterans Thornton and Madi Collins as well as key contributions from sophomores Emilee Chander and Lola Bailey, as well as freshman Addie Whitby – quickly established a 7-2 advantage in Set #4. That’s when JCS front-liners Elliana Cox and freshman Jazlyn Beckham took over, pounding a variety of winners as the Lady Eagles tallied 23 of the final 32 points to win the set 25-16, clinching the match.
Crockett received tremendous efforts from its back row crew of Addie Davidson, Nataly Amador, Carmen Claybrooks, and Jentry Elmore, as well as dependable setter Lakyn Forsythe, but JCS countered with a power-based attack that kept the visitors from ever yielding too many successive points.
The back-and-forth kept the crowd engaged and entertained, and it was a match that should have a positive effect on both teams’ pursuits moving forward.
The Lady Cavs, now 6-4, will host Martin Westview Tuesday at 5:00 for a varsity doubleheader: two matches in one night. Crockett will then travel to Milan Thursday evening to battle the Lady Dawgs.
MIDDLE SCHOOL SOFTBALL: Coach Duke Kail’s CCMS diamonders hung a first-inning six-spot on visiting Union City and added runs in the third and fourth frames to gain a 10-0 mercy rule win over the Lady Tornadoes.
Center fielder Evie Davidson collected a double and two singles in three trips to the plate, driving in three runs, to pace Crockett’s offensive attack. Winning pitcher Piper Ledford knocked in two runs with a pair of hits and tossed a four-inning no-hitter as well, striking out six. She missed a perfect game by a single batter, who reached on an outfield error in the third.
Abbey McAnulty added a double for the winners, who are now 5-2. Payton Gadlen stole three bases as a courtesy runner in the contest, and Mahaley Hicks contributed a run-scoring hit. CCMS will next play at Lexington Thuesday at 5:30.
MIDDLE SCHOOL SOCCER: South Gibson – scoring six goals in the match’s final 19 minutes – defeated CCMS 10-1 Monday after building a 3-0 first-half lead. Lady Cav goalkeeper Kaylee Servin had made 11 saves in the first half when a Lady Hornet shot hit her in the face and bloodied her nose, forcing her to leave the game.
Kalynn Lewis tallied Crockett’s lone goal with 25 minutes left to play in the second period, but SGC poured on the offense after that to break the game wide open. The Lady Cavs will play at Hardin County on Thursday.

Crockett County and Jackson Christian School engaged in a volleyball match Monday night in Alamo that featured a post-season atmosphere and post-season quality of play. Set scores were generally tight throughout, with the lead often switching hands. JCS eventually prevailed in four sets, but fans were treated to one of the best regular-season matchups they're likely to see. Full story coming in the morning. Laman Says Memphis Tournament Made Lady Cav Volleyball Team Better

Some people might look at a 3-3 record from an athletic tournament and assess that team as “middle of the pack” or (the dreaded worse-sounding) “mediocre.”
Crockett County volleyball coach Andrew Laman looks at what his squad accomplished this weekend at the White Station Spartan Showdown in Memphis as the potential springboard to a highly successful season.
Laman’s club carried a 3-0 record to the Memphis Sports & Events Center Friday night, and the young coach knew his Lady Cavaliers would be facing two of the better teams in the Memphis area on the opening-night portion of the tournament schedule.
Crockett began play against Northpoint Christian, a school located in Southaven, Mississippi that actually competes in the TSSAA (Tennessee’s state association). In fact, they’re the defending regional champions for their classification – and promptly showed it by upending the Lady Cavs 2-0.
Laman’s crew had to follow that one up with another tough foe, Lausanne Collegiate School of Memphis, a team that won twice as many matches as it lost a year ago. Lausanne also handed the Lady Cavs a 2-0 loss.
“We played two really good teams Friday night,” Laman said, “and we didn’t play our best. I wasn’t too happy with how we looked.”
But Saturday was a brand new day. Crockett opened against Brighton, which had also lost to Northpoint Friday night and would also fall to Lausanne later Saturday. The Lady Cavaliers toppled the Lady Cardinals 2-0.
Next up was Munford, which had beaten Millington Central on Friday night. But Crockett downed the Lady Trojans 2-0, and suddenly things were looking brighter. That victory boosted Laman’s troops into the Silver Bracket semifinals for a rematch with Brighton – and Crockett prevailed again, 2-0.
Three straight wins pushed the Lady Cavs into the Silver Bracket championship matchup against Bartlett, but the Lady Panthers eked out a 2-1 triumph.
“We showed tremendous improvement between Friday and Saturday,” Laman said. “We tried a few different things and moved some people around. We played so much better Saturday, and I felt a whole lot better about the weekend than I did after Friday night. We have some big matches this coming week, and I’m looking forward to seeing if we can continue playing like we did on Saturday.”
One of the reasons Crockett performed better on Saturday, Laman said, was the insertion of freshman Addie Whitby into a more prominent role in the rotation. Whitby’s two older sisters Bailey Ann and Audrey – now both in school at Union University – made State Tournament appearances as Lady Cavalier players.
“Addie comes from a volleyball family,” Laman said, “and she’s very athletic. She sure played well for us Saturday, and I think she’s going to help us a lot from this point forward.”
Crockett, now 6-3 overall, will host Jackson Christian School at 5:00 Monday (JV and varsity, in that order) and then will play home to a doubleheader varsity matchup with Westview (of Martin) on Tuesday beginning at 5:00. On Thursday at 5:00, the Lady Cavs travel to regional nemesis Milan, which just won a weekend tournament championship at Freed-Hardeman University.

Cavaliers Begin 2026 Football Season with a 10-Touchdown, 68-0 Annihilation

Twenty years from now, when Nashville Collegiate Prep is celebrating its 2046 TSSAA Football State Championship, an emotional coach will begin telling the story, “We’ve come a long way since this school’s first official varsity game. Did you know that we actually lost our very first game 68-0?!!!”
Ah, but that’s 2046. Today is the morning after, 2026. And that 68-0 outcome is on the minds of all Crockett County fans, because they’re the ones who had to cringe their way through it.
If you weren’t there at Cavalier Stadium, that ‘68’ is not a misprint. The Cavaliers scored 10 touchdowns against the newly-formed Lions… WITH a running clock that started in the second quarter… WITH virtually everyone suited up for the home team entering the game at some point.
In hindsight, these two teams shouldn’t have been playing each other. It only came about when Memphis Middle College dropped Crockett from its schedule. The Cavs needed a new opening opponent, and the Nashville school was looking for games to construct its first-ever campaign.
“It wasn’t ideal,” Coach Kevin Ward said afterward. “We didn’t really know what to expect. But we both needed a game, and the date worked for both of us. At least it gave us the opportunity to get playing time for a lot of guys, which should be helpful later on. We got to see some things we liked, and others we need to fix and get better. So we’ll move on from here.”
Ward especially praised his team’s kickoff coverage – and yes, there were a lot of them. But even with the constant personnel changes and substitutions, NCP never gained more as many as 20 yards on a single return. That had been a weakness of last year’s Cavalier squad, and Ward said his staff has been working hard to keep the coverage team from overrunning the returner.
Crockett scored in almost every imaginable way. Four different runners tallied, as did three different pass receivers. The Cavs returned both a fumble and an interception for touchdowns as well. Defensively, the hosts held the Lions to 27 yards gained on 33 offensive plays, so no complaints could be found there. But Ward also knows his troops will be tested much more severely by future opponents.
With that in mind, we’ll let the game statistics and the picture captions tell the story. There’s really not a lot else to say as Crockett prepares to host Ripley this coming week.
