One common misconception in EMT class is that an AED and a defibrillator are the same thing. While both deliver electrical therapy to the heart, there is an important difference. ๐Ÿšจ

A defibrillator is any device capable of delivering a shock to treat life-threatening cardiac rhythms. Advanced defibrillators can also monitor ECG rhythms, perform synchronized cardioversion, and provide transcutaneous pacing.

An AED, or Automated External Defibrillator, is a type of defibrillator designed for basic providers and the general public. It analyzes the heart rhythm and only advises a shock when a shockable rhythm is detected.

โšก The two shockable cardiac arrest rhythms EMT students need to know are:
โ€ข Ventricular Fibrillation (VF/V-Fib) โ€“ chaotic electrical activity causing the heart to quiver instead of pumping blood.
โ€ข Pulseless Ventricular Tachycardia (pVT) โ€“ a rapid rhythm with no effective pulse.
๐Ÿ’ก Think of it this way:
โžก๏ธ All AEDs are defibrillators.
โžก๏ธ Not all defibrillators are AEDs.

Early recognition, high-quality CPR, and rapid defibrillation for VF and pulseless VT save lives.

While on assignment at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Chris Gregory, former EMT campus Manager/Instructor had the opportunity to reconnect with one of his former students from EMT 73, Neha Gondra. Both are currently serving with the U.S. Army while pursuing their medical education. ๐Ÿช–๐Ÿš‘

Itโ€™s always rewarding to see former students advancing their careers and continuing their commitment to service. From the EMT classroom to Army medicine, their shared dedication to patient care, leadership, and lifelong learning has brought them together once again. ๐Ÿ’ซ

How do EMTs safely remove a patient after a car accident? ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿš‘

Safely removing a patient from a vehicle is one of the most important parts of trauma care. An improper extrication can worsen existing injuries, create new ones, and put both the patient and rescuers at risk.

To help prevent further harm, EMTs follow critical steps such as:

โ›‘๏ธ Maintaining cervical spine stabilization when a spinal injury is suspected

๐Ÿฉบ Assessing the patient for life-threatening injuries

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Communicating a clear plan with the entire team before movement begins

๐Ÿ”’ Properly securing the patient using the appropriate equipment

๐Ÿšจ Moving the patient in a controlled and coordinated manner

In this training scenario, our EMT students practiced the teamwork, communication, and patient care skills needed to safely remove a patient from a vehicle. Every movement matters when protecting a patient from further injury and ensuring they receive the care they need.
